Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Hi,  I run Memokit and Boostkit, memory managers by Memokit.com.  I also periodically run Norton Utilities Registry and Disk cleaning services.  When I do, I lose the above progrmas, including the icons in the quick start tray.  Is there some way I can get Norton to recognise that these programs are OK?

In case it matters, I have an up-to-date version of Norton Internet Security running and the Utilities software is version 14.5.0.120 (I note that the very latest version of Utilities is V.15, but the update check says I'm up to date).

Thanks,  Ian

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Version 15 isn't a free update for 14.5 users.  You'd have to purchase a new copy in order to get 15.  As to recognizing, it depends on which scan you're running and what NU found.  For whatever scan you run, go through the complete summary of items listed and if you see any items that refer to those programs, you can right click the item and choose "irnore".  This will set up exclusions for the next time you run that scan so it will ignore the entry.

Hi,

Thanks for that.  I'll have to check out V.16 to see if I need to upgrade.  I'll follow your instructions and see if I can resolve the issue that way.

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Sorry - I meant V.15, but that'ts not the reason for posting.  I sent a copy of the clean up report to Memokit, but don't expect a reply any time soon.  I can't see anything remotely linked to the software.

What I have discovered is that the effect of running the clean up is only to remove the icon from the quick start tray.  The software keeps running in the background.  This isn't much use as the icon is active and shows status of free memory at any point and by clicking on it, it forces a memory refresh operation.  If I can't see it, I can't do this.  Is there a way of preventing the loss of the icon?  This also happens to a back up program I use, so it appears to be associated with unfamiliar programs.

Thanks,

Ian

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

We'll need to figure out what's being removed.  It could be a startup item, CLSID reference, link reference, etc.  If you run the scan and look at the results before doing the repair we can look for items related to both Memokit and your backup product.

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Hi again,

Thanks for your continued inyterest.  I obtained the attached report after restarting the PC to get the Memokit icon back.

I started Norton Utilities, went for Disk Clean Up and left all options selected.  Once the scan is complete and actioned, I have the option to Ignore for the time being, Restart or just Refresh.  If I go for Restart, I assume I'll get the icon back.  I normally go for Refresh, though, being quicker.  When I do this, all the desktop icons and menu bar disappear and then reappear, less the Memokit Boostkit and Auto Back Up Pro icons.

Please take your time to check out the report as I'll be off line for a few days.

Thanks again,

Ian

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Hi again,

Sorry to drag this out, but I thought I'd better check the effect of hitting Restart and Ignore (actually, Continue).

In the case of Restart, it's just the same as a normal restart, ie the icons appear again.  For the Continue option, nothing changes, ie the icons stay put.

Thanks again,

Ian

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

I see nothing in that scan log that would have an impact on icons.  Was that the only scan log you have after running that scan?  In order to identify we would need the scan log right after the icon disappears.

Hi again,  I've just done another clean after a day catching up with odds and ends.  Same result, ie icons disappear but Memokit is till running in the background.  File enclosed as requested.

Thanks again,

Ian

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

I seem to have stumped te experts.  Just another point, in case it matters - I just had the same experience, ie desk top icons disappear then just some reappear.  This time, I had just finished deleting some very large video files and was trying to close explorer when I got a Windows error/debug message.  Could it be a Windows problem after all?

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Apologies for the delay in response.  I was unavailable the last several days.  After discussing with the developer we were going to point to Windows.  The problem seems to be a delay in the refresh of those icons when it cycles.  The scans by NU don't touch any areas that could impact the system tray so it has to be the refresh issue.

Hi again,

Sounds logical, so I'll start to look there.  Thanks again.

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

Hi again,

Now at least I know that t's not a Memokit issue.  I did a quick Bing search for Refresh issues and saw one on altering the refresh rate.  I didn't think it'd make any difference but tried it anyway (up from 60 ro 75Hz).  I then did a clean up and the disappearing icon event occurred again, this time including the newly-installed DNS icon!

Keep looking, Ian.

Re: Norton Utilities shuts down my memory manager

I apologies if I made it seem like it was a problem with memokit.  This is a Windows issue where it's not able to refresh and redraw all of icons.  Same as before, do you still see the Norton DNS proces running?
