Have you restarted your computer?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Norton verified file integrity via the cloud. A cloud only can work if you have a good internet connection. I see similar things on my end. But not 7 minutes. Usually 30-60 seconds at the most.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

i have 3.6 mb real download

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Wow.................3.6Mbps would explain it. That is extremely slow. DSL low speed. That means your upload speed is like half that. I have a 200Mbps download connection when I am at home with an upload of 12Mbps. So the 7 minute delay you are seeing is based on your very slow internet speed. Is that 3.6Mbps? Did you run a speed test?

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

why with Norton 2012-14 scans exe files in 10 seconds? second thing, why Norton 2016 sometimes puts 10 seconds to scan exe files?other times like now seven minutes?

no, I do not totally agree with you, because 3.6 MB are enough

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

You spoke of downloads. Thats what I went off. Norton like many other antivirus solutions now a days rely heavily on the cloud. Previous version did not. What exactly are these files? How large? Where are you downloading them from? And yes your internet connection speed is extremely slow. Witch WILL have a direct effect on how Norton communicates.

Are you speaking strictly about Download Insight inspecting files you just downloaded off the internet? Or are these files on your pc already?

Download Insight uses reputation information exclusively when it makes decisions about downloaded files. It does not use signatures or heuristics to make decisions. If Download Insight allows a file, Auto-Protect or SONAR scans the file when the user opens or runs the file.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

i download the geforce experience (like this NVIDIA Package Launcher (73.06-desktop-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe, 336 MB (352,622,016 bytes)???) from ufficial [official] web site,

1. I disabled the internet connection, NS said:

it requires an Internet connection to run a comprehensive scan... run a limited scan?

I fellow that and got the below img:

2. I re-enabled connection,manual scan completed within 1 second.

NOW U:

  • Were u trying to scan the said stand-alone NVIDIA Package Launcher by running your Norton product? NS? NIS?
  • Have you checked hidden issues on your disk by commanding chkdsk c: /r?

Or you may try running Norton Remove and Reinstall tool later.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Hello

I use NVidia Gforce Experience. It is part of my video driver update. I have never had a problem with that program. I'm using Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I'm using NSBU 22.8.0.50.

Thanks.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

The problem is not with the integrity of the Nvidia driver. The problem is he claims with it takes 7 minutes for Norton to verify the file. But on a 3Mbps internet connection it will be slow. I am sure the 7 minutes is an exaggeration. Lol

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Hello

I know it wasn't a driver issue. My point is that I get an update to the Geforce  Experience update every time my driver gets updated. My update with the drivers, Experience and the other parts of the update is never over 300 MB. There shouldn't be any bog down due to scanning .exe files. Even during my 56k days of dial up, I don't think it took that long . It must be an exaggeration.

Thanks.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Could not agree more with you floplot. The so called "7 minute" delay on 3 different pc's is definitely exaggerated. But the slow internet does have a factor. Slow downloads means even slower uploads. Norton can only upload and verify a file in the cloud if the upload speed is strong.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

So I just tried to duplicate what georgi mihaylov 91 claims. I went to Nvidia.com and downloaded the latest G-force drivers. I selected a random video card which gave me the 375.50 drivers dated from 10/28/2016. It was a 373MB file. I downloaded it in under 2 minutes. I watched Chromes download manager finish. The second it finished I started my stopwatch. 12 seconds later Norton pop up in the right bottom corner of my system tray gave me a thumbs up saying the file was good. That was a honest test. I tried the same test on my other laptops. From download finish to Norton verification took anywhere from 10-13 seconds. I wonder if georgi mihaylov 91 is using any other security.

A 200 Mbps broadband connection gives, ideally, around 25 MB/sec, let's say, with a normal loss, of packets overhead, around 23-24 MB/sec, so a 373 MB downloaded installer should take around 15-20 secs maximum to download, you said under 2 minutes, which is a lot more than 15-20 secs. Something does not fit right here... , not a problem, just mentionning...

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Your replay is off topic. 200Mbp is only guarantee via ethernet. Wifi is around 130-150Mbps. You can only download as fast as Nvida can deliver it to you. You can have the fastest connection on earth but if what your downloading isn't being sent to you fast enough that has a factor. In the future please stick to the topic at hand. I took the liberty of trying to duplicate his concern. Did you? Thanks

FYI.......cable internet will slow down the more people log on. The download took under 2 minutes via wifi. For a 373MB file thats extremely fast. Speed test just performed via wifi is 178 down and 12 up. Let's try to help the user and not try to judge my internet connection.

I downloaded the file in 62 seconds and I have 4 times, (50/5 FTTC), less than the speed you are claiming... so maybe the Nvidia server likes my ISP better? cause it gave me more than 6MB/sec for the download....

Af for the help, you are the expert here, I'm just a novice, both Windows and Norton, so I'm reading your posts with extreme interest, it helps me understanding a lot about pc's and s/w.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Please stick to the topic at hand. Posts have been reported. The user isn't not complaining about download speeds. He is claiming it takes 7 minutes for Norton to verify the file. That means upload speed. Did you try to duplicate this? I think not. 2 of us have and cannot duplicate it.

Posts have been reported for what please?? Are you offended??

As an idea, and since OP is on DSL, at least I think so, he should check for latency and ping issues and maybe, if not already, ask ISP to change the line profile from Interleaved, (no matter the bit-depth) to Fastpath? (If available and possible). Ping should be that way at least 3-4 times faster, no matter the line speed, maybe more... of course there can be more complex underlying problems than a simple slow ping that can affect reliable reachability to Symantec servers.

Why do you say it would be the upload speed? Norton does not upload any files for scanning. The connection Norton establishes is to access the latest malware definitions that may not have been downloaded yet. The scan is still done locally.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

The final scan results will be a combination of several layers of protection, incorporating both the Local and Cloud definitions.
Total Cloud Protection - a feature that scans your PC directly using cloud-based virus definitions.
Over 4.3 trillion relationships now power all of Norton’s real-time protection. Every time you click a file, Norton evaluates it against thousands of criteria to determine if it is an attack. By relying on Norton’s cloud, we have reduced the size of definitions, which normally used to take up space on your hard drive, by 80%.

Re: norton very slow examine exe files

Any cloud antivirus works the same. Download Insight works via the cloud. After you are down downloading a file it verifies that file with the cloud. That would mean your antivirus is uploading info from your pc to the cloud. If you are on a poor connection that upload speed to verify a file with the cloud will take longer.

Guys we are getting way off topic. georgi mihaylov 91 claims that it takes Norton 7 minutes to verify a file with the cloud. This is on 3 different pc's. The 7 minutes is surely exaggerated. The commonality between all 3 pc's is the internet connection. Thanks.
