Norton VPN default gateway

Running Windows 10 and Norton 360 Deluxe.

When I run ipconfig it shows my VPN subnet mask as 255.255.255.255 and my default gateway as 0.0.0.0 with only an IP4 address.

Reason I checked this was because when I put my mouse over the wifi icon it shows both my home network and Norton VPN as having Internet access.

Im really confused and would like someone to explain this to me.

How can I tell which network is actually transmitting my data?

Re: Norton VPN default gateway

Hello Wanda. In Windows you should see something similar to the screenshot below with the VPN enabled. Note that my WiFi is being used and the NortonSecureVpn shows under a public network since it is masking my actual IP address.

VPN disabled:

Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Norton VPN default gateway

What i see is network status shows my private network connected to the internet. Not my VPN. Yet per My Norton, my Vpn is connected.

Please help me understand WTF is going on and what I should be doing to figure it out. Please.

Re: Norton VPN default gateway

Wanda, please provide a screenshot of what your network indications are within Windows settings WITH the VPN enabled. My first screenshot is what you should see listed. We can work from there. One question is does your ISP have a static IP assigned for you?  Here is how to post a screenshot in the forums. https://community.norton.com/en/forums/how-post-image-forums-0

The subnet 255.255.255.255 is an IPv4 subnet "MASK" as shown before. It forces ALL devices on a specific network to communicate with your router before anything else, including the internet.  Its useful for network discovery and usage of devices like printers, etc within that network. The subnet address 0.0.0.0 is also an IPv4 address and is a NON-ROUTABLE, meta-address used to designate an invalid, unknown, or non-applicable target (a ‘no particular address’ place holder). In otherwords a NULL route which is set as a "DEVICES" subnet mask vice its actual IP. Try performing the steps in this article and a restart of your machine. Enable your VPN and check again for the configuration you see.

For the record the Norton VPN doesn't support IPV6 only IPv4. If your ISP requires it within their dedicated device Norton will ignore it and protect your network under IPv4 as it should. Gurun peterweb has a previous solution regarding IPv6 questions in this thread

Re: Norton VPN default gateway

I believe the VPN scenario has changed since peterweb's earlier post by Sueb7. With the VPN enabled I hover over my WiFi status in the system tray. It reports Norton Secure VPN has internet access. my Core router has no internet access. From the screenshots I've posted the coveyence is that with the VPN enabled the actual network IP is being masked, therefore showing no internet access. It is easier to get a detailed screenshot from Windows settings vice a system tray popup lol. Thanks bjm for the link to her earlier thread.
