Norton will not uninstall even with help of removal tool

I recently bought a year subscription for Norton Internet Security but I cannot uninstall it because an older version of norton will not uninstall. I tried to uninstall it manually but it would get stuck on the uninstall part and othing would change. I did some research and downloaded the removal tool but that will not uninstall it either. It stays on the 'Uninstalling' step and it looks like there is no progress. I tried it again today and it is still on the uninstalling step and it has been hours.

Re: Norton will not uninstall even with help of removal tool

The Norton Removal Tool has been replaced by the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool.

Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool

If you have Norton Family installed, uninstall it before you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

  1. Download the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

Save the file to the Windows desktop. On some browsers, the file is automatically saved to its default location.

  2. To open the Downloads window in your browser, press the Ctrl + J key.

  3. Double-click the NRnR icon.

  4. Read the license agreement, and click Agree.

  5. Click Advanced Options.

  6. Click Remove Only.

  7. Click Remove.

  8. Click Restart Now.

After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Norton.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Norton will not uninstall even with help of removal tool

Hi JazzRose,

Perhaps you could dig a bit deeper.  Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and see if the "old NIS" is listed.  If it is, please make note of the version (version should be shown in the left most column).

I have seen some cases where the uninstall becomes corrupted and the only way to uninstall after an uninstall fails is to reinstall that "old version" and then do the uninstall again.

Let us know if what the "old" version is and we should be able to assist.
