are you seeing greyed On

greyed On = Off under the control of Norton install.

open Control Panel > click Windows Defender > what is reported?

If that doesn't help you might uninstall Norton, disable WD and reinstall Norton.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

If you still think WD and norton both running, try this:

Open an elevated command prompt. as administrator!

Verify the WMI repository is not corrupt by running the following command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

If the repository is not corrupted, a “WMI Repository is consistent” message will be returned.

If you get something else,Run the following commands:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

If the repository salvage fails to work, then run the following command to see if it resolves the issue:
winmgmt /resetrepository

After the last command, there should be a “WMI Repository has been reset” message returned and then Reboot PC.

Regards.

Some Windows restarts fixed the problem somehow.

Thanks guys for all the replies, appreciate it! :)

Darn.. it's back again, the icon in the right corner even though WD is off. :(

Had to kill it by disable thru Task Manager, it just keeps getting back after a restart..

Hello

Do you have any pending Windows WD definitions that need to be installed? Have you received the complete Norton update to version 22.9.1.12 from the official Norton Update process?

Thanks.

WD is behaving as it should. It is not running protection, Norton is handling that, but the new features in WD like device performance & health, app & browser control, family options means it does place the notification bar icon just to show it sees no problems. Confusing since MS hasn't clarified that in release notes.

Hmm, no Windows Defender notification icon here......YMMV
