NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello,

It's been almost two weeks since the NS 22.6.0.142 update was released and my NS version 22.5.5.14 on my Windows 7 64 machine has not updated yet.

There are two folders, 22.5.5.14 and 22.6.0.142, at Program Files (x86)\Norton Security\Engine64.

A similar situation to the previous update delay, when two version folders existed and NS failed to update to 22.5.5.14

Curious if anyone else is still at version 22.5.5.14?

Thanks.

Update to v22.6.0.142 has been pulled back as per Update on 11-March-2016 https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/norton-226-product-update-available-now

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hi CurrentR,

I have 3 Win10/64 computers, and none have updated despite many restarts and live updates.

I know the update to 22.6.0.142 was pulled on the 11 March, but it does not explain why we did not get it as they anounced on the 7 March that it was available to ALL customers by manual live update.

With the previous update it took me a month to get it, and that was only after many conversations with admin. Sent them logs and they took control of my computer for investigation. I have a funny feeling we're going to have the same problem again.

Oh well, maybe it's a good thing we did not get that update yet as it seems like there are many problems with it.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Thanks Rainbow_2.

Yes, Davec33, It's deja vu all over again, unfortunately. Hopefully Symantec gets the automatic update right when they do make 22.6.0.142 available again and we don't have to gothrough this everytime there is a version update.

Cheers.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Well the 22.6.0.142 is again available for update (as of today) and still I cannot get it through manual Live Update.

I guess I'll give it another week and then query it with Admin if still unable to get it.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

I wouldn't rush to get this version 22.6.0.142 if I were you, it is still bugged because I did a live update yesterday and went from the previous version to this one and when I tried a few things that other forum members said had issues with it's still the same. That is the graphs cannot show 'usage' because the programme then stops and Norton Insight cannot scan 'all files' without coming back with an error message!

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hi,

Just thought I'd try and do those two things again I mentioned in my previous thread, namely an all files scan in 'Norton Insight' and the graphs issue and can say with surprise that they are now working as intended?  Don't know what happened there but there you go :)  It now appears to me to be fixed.

@ OP I hope you can pull the new update soonest.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello Brummie

The graph issue was an intermittent one before. I know that they are working on a solution for that one since logs have been collected. I had the graph issue also. I haven't heard of others having any issues with Norton Insight other than it doesn't get updated very often as far as new files getting a better reputation or showing more users.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hi floplot,

I do have Win 10 fast start enabled, but I have tried "Restart" several times. I'm in Canada waiting for English version. Norton Security was uninstalled/reinstalled several times (using Norton tool) when I had this problem with the last update.

Last time Norton made some change after twice getting logs from me, and I finally got the update to 22.5.5.15, so they must know what the cause of the problem is.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello Dave

If you had issues with it updating to the new version, I would wait a few days for the update and if it doesn't come thru by Friday, Keep trying Live Update often and also, please leave your computer on so that the other files can come thru. This update has several parts to it. At the end, it will ask for a restart so it can finish installing like the Windows Updates do. I would also suggest that you keep Fast Startup disabled. Norton does work better with it disabled, I have been told by many users in here. I would suggest calling Customer Support again and see what they have to say. Here is the official Chat link for it.

http://www.norton.com/chat They should be there 24/7 depending on the location.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Good morning floplot,

Thanks for the reply.

I never saw this 'graph' issue till I updated the other day but glad to say it appears ok. (Just this second gave it another go). The 'Insight' issue just didn't want to play on the day I updated, even restarting pc so many times and running live update some, only till I booted up following morning all was well with both my issues.

Not sure if the original patch was pulled by Symantec for a day or so, (Some forum members reported something like this) then reissued.

Have a good one

Hey CurrentR and Davec33, count me in as another who hasn't received the new update yet. I think we were some of the last to be updated to the previous version. I think I'm starting to see a pattern here.......

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello Those who haven't received the 22.6 version yet.

Please try uninstalling the Norton program using the Control Panel method, restart. Then please use the Norton Removal Tool. It does a better job cleaning up the old version. Then install the program by using either www.norton.com/latestns or www.norton.com/latestnsbu  Please remember to run Live Update. Those links should update you to the 22.6 versions. Please pick the one you need. If you have a different Norton product, please let me know which one. I don't think your Norton Account will have the latest version if you haven't been able to install it yet. You may have to enter your key again. If you have any other Norton products, the NRT will remove them also.

You can download the Norton Removal tool from

www.norton.com/nrt

Thanks.

Count me in as another who hasn't received the new update yet! I have one Windows XP 32bit Home, two Windows 7 64bit Home and one Windows 8.1 64bit Home all still on NS 22.5.5.15. If anyone has noticed the people that have reported problems getting the new update are the same ones that did not get the previous update (22.5.4.24 to 22.5.5.15). I agree with Cloudcroft there seems to be a pattern developing here...

No disrespect but I am not willing to go through the hassle of uninstalling and reinstalling as it did not help last time and I highly doubt it will help this time! Also we shouldn't have to do that every time a new update come out!

Hopefully Symantec will get their update system figured out for everyone!

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Still at 22.5.5.15 here despite numerous manual LiveUpdates.

Thanks for the advice floplot, but I agree with monami123, these version updates should be automatic and not require uninstalling/reinstalling NS every time. I tried this when NS was stuck as at the previous version and even then NS failed to update.

I guess we wait again (but hopefully not too long).

Cheers.

Hi,

The Norton 22.6.0.142 Product Update is only released for Norton Security, Norton Security with Backup, Norton Internet Security, Norton 360,Norton and Antivirus products.
For partner products and Comcast Norton Security Suite, 22.6.0.142 update are not yet available. We will post an update when its made available. If you have the Norton product from partners like Comcast NSS, Staples etc, the latest version is 22.5.

Well, the best way to make sure you get the update is to post here that you haven't been able to get it. Yep, I post about this on the board last night, and this morning I run LiveUpdate and get the new version. CurrentR and Davec33, I think you got the last update after me, so maybe you guys are getting close.

All of these users haven't received 22.6 yet. They also had problems getting the last update also. They don't want to use remove and reinstall all the time, nor do they want to use NRT. This should be coming to them with just running Live Update, but it doesn't come thru for them.

Hi Sunil_GA,

I, too, purchased my NS from Staples.

To echo Davec33, how is the Staples brand NS different from the "regular" NS and why are the updates delayed?

Thanks.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

I would just like to put in my two cents.  I also have Norton Security originally purchased 2 years ago from Staples.  For the first year, no problems with automatically updating the version number.  But the second year, after a removal and re-install, I noticed a Staples logo on the GUI (downloaded the fresh copy via my online Norton account). It was around the same time that I started having these update issues that are described in this thread (and in previous threads with the version update problem.) I am glad to know that Symantec is aware of the issue, but I am like Dave33 and CurrentR:  Why are the version updates delayed for NS bought at Staples?  As it stands now, I have done like floplot suggested and downloaded my copy of NS from http://www.norton.com/latestns, so as a result, my product is completely up to date.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello Bill

I am glad that my suggestion worked for you. The version number updates seem to always come in later with partner sites. It happens with the free Norton program from Comcast also as well as any other partner sites like that. I think there is a little customization for each of these partner sites which results in the program being slightly different. So the update process has to be customized for those programs separately from the usual Norton product. That's my take on the issue.

I am curious to see now Bill if you will have to wait again for the next version update. I wonder since you used latest ns if that gave you now the same version as the others who don't have to wait.

Thanks.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

I have been getting my updates (this version and the previous one) a fairly long time after they are released, (but apparently before CurrentR and Davec33), and my copy of Norton Security was downloaded from the Norton website. I had a license for Norton Internet Security, and through online chat Norton allowed me to download Norton Security and "transferred" my license. So my copy of NS didn't come from a partner site, unless the fact that my license was transferred from NIS puts me in the same "group". I will be curious to see if I have to wait again if there is another update.

Hi Floplot,

Thanks for the reply.  I am hopeful that the version that I downloaded from http://www.norton.com/latestns will update OK when the time comes.  There is no Staples logo on the GUI when I downloaded NS from that link.  When I download NS using a link from my Norton account, the GUI always has the Staples logo on it.  So that leads me to think that I now have the version that will update quicker.  Time will tell though.

I am late to this thread, but it seems to me that similar situations have been discussed in the past and @huwyngr was involved - maybe he can add some info or insight into business's related sales of Norton.   Seems like we discussed Best Buy purchases of Norton also at that time and that BB controlled the renewals (?).

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello yank

This thread isn't about getting renewals from partnered sites. This customers are getting every update late like your NSS gets the patches last after the regular users get them.

The BB issue had to do with getting renewals and the issue that those users had to get the renewals thru BB.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

I was under the impression that when I went to Staples and purchased a retail version of Norton Security that is what I was getting. However, based on this thread I get the feeling that in reality I purchased a bastardized copy of NS. It must be considerable different code not just branding to take almost a month and still counting to get the same update as the real NS received. It leaves me with a distasteful feeling of being a 3rd class citizen (1st class real NS, 2nd class Comcast NS, and finally 3rd class Staples NS)!

Now for a question ... what is so different in the code and it must be something significant to NOT get the same update the real NS got almost a month earlier?

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

I agree with monami123 and I hope that someone from admin will eventually explain what is going on.

My NS software was downloaded from the Norton site so I have to think the code must be the same as everyone else. The only thing I can think of is that Norton recognizes the serial numbers that were sold by Staples and then somehow adds the Staples logo to the GUI.

But why do we have to wait so long for the program update !!!!

Kudos0

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello

There is no difference in the program itself when you buy it from Staples. You get the same updates and the program is the same. There are 2 differences. One is that the Logo is on the product and their is some extra coding needed to keep track of the sales of the product from Staples. As with any cooperation between 2 companies, these things take extra time.

Hi Davec33:

Symantec employee gerry_egan posted some information about this co-branded Staples layout in Vague99's August 2015 thread Advertisement in Norton Security with Backup? Gerry's post would indicate that Symantec can use the serial number and SKU to track purchases from retail partners, and it sounds like Symantec is expanding this co-branding program beyond Staples.

Hi Imacri,

Thanks for that information and link.

In the future I'll be sure never to buy NS from Staples. I wasted so much time on the previous update trying to get the latest version. Even Norton tech support did not know what was going on. They collected logs from my computer and also did remote access. Finally after about 2 months they said it was fixed, and my NS did then update. Never did anyone at that time blame the fact that I had purchased NS from Staples.

Only with this latest update did we start to see the references from admin to NS from Staples being delayed.

That was because I asked Norton about this delay with customers who bought their products from Staples.

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hello.

The thing that bothers me about the Staples branded NS is that "regular" NS customers benefit from protection improvements for weeks before "Staples NS" customers benefit from them. In that respect, the Staples and regular are not the same products, otherwise the level of protection for both products would be exactly the same, at the same time.

If anyone can successfully uninstall the "Staples" version of NS and install the "regular" version of NS, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Cheers.

CurrentR:

Hi CurrentR:

I'm a bit confused about that myself.  My understanding is that you can get rid of the Staples logo on your Norton GUI if you follow floplot's instructions <here> (i.e., uninstall Norton from Control Panel / re-boot and wipe with Norton Removal Tool (NRT) / re-boot and reinstall with the latest offline installer downloaded from the Norton download servers and run LiveUpdates to patch to v22.6). When you uninstall from the Control Panel, is it okay to select "I plan to reinstall my Norton product.  Please leave my settings behind" or do you have to completely wipe Norton off your local drive by selecting "Please remove all user data"? And does this reinstall method get rid of the Staples-branded product permanently, or does it simply allow you to update your product to the latest version until the next product update is released?

I still use NIS v21 and the latest v22 offline installer (English-US) for my product is available at www.norton.com/latestnis.  Am I correct that Norton Security Standard and Deluxe users (no backup feature) users should download their offline installer from www.norton.com/latestns, while Norton Security Premium users (with backup) should download from www.norton.com/latestnsbu?

Does this also mean that using the automated Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool or clicking the Download button in your Norton Account at https://manage.norton.com/ will simply install another Staples-branded Norton product and prevent you from updating to the latest product version?

Re: NS Fails to Update to Latest version, Again?

Hi Imacri,

As you know, I can not provide an official answer to your questions, but I can provide the following info from past experience and my notes:

The product licensing information and the local Identity Safe vault remain intact irrespective of the method you choose to uninstall your Norton security product. Upon the next installation of the inline product version, the subscription information will automatically be picked up. The latest version automatically picks up the previously saved local Identity Safe vault and you are provided with an option to retain the local vault or move to the online vault when you access the Identity Safe component.

With your permission, we can ignore the Local Vault info as it does not pertain to your questions.

We know the Staples Logo and the StockKeeping Unit (SKU) are the only items  different in the Staples product and the "from Norton" products (ie latest NS/NSBU).

So is the SKU part of he product licensing information retained by the NRnRT and the NRT or is the SKU in fact something different and Staples is ID'd as Staples by the Product Key - as in different series of Key numbers for different products?

Please bear in mind there is SKU info shown in the ABOUT for Norton Products.   I believe a comparison of Staples and "from Norton" product SKU's will be different - and that could then lead to a comparison of the "series" of product keys?  FWIW, Comcast's NSS has an additional entry under the three different SKU's which says Vendor Name: Xfinity

In regards to the "please remove all user data" I feel that refers to the user settings - not the product licensing info.

Hopefully this provides additional info for you - but may not answer all your questions - just wanted to add some info to your search.

Hi yank:

Based on Symantec employee gerry_egan's post in Vague99's August 2015 thread Advertisement in Norton Security with Backup?  I understood that Symantec can use the serial number and SKUs (Current / Family / Media) to track purchases from retail partners.  My serial number seems to be associated with the product key when I look at the Services tab of my Norton account at https://manage.norton.com/ so that wouldn't change as long as I have days remaining on my subscription.  I'm just not certain if using the offline installers from www.norton.com/latestns or www.norton.com/latestnsbu alters one or more of the SKUs and makes it impossible for Symantec to know if you purchased your product at Staples.

There have been a few people who were able to update their Staples-branded product to v22.6 after following floplot's instructions - see Emile L's comment in the thread Microsoft Word VFPODBC Issue since recent Norton Update for one example.  I normally purchase a spare Norton product key at Staples when they're on sale so I was curious to know if floplot's workaround switches you back to an unbranded product that doesn't have the Staples logo on the GUI (and presumably won't have an issue with product updates going forward).

Also I noticed today something quite strange. I have 4 computers under the same license. Three are Windows 10 and are stuck at 22.5. One is Windows 7 and is at 22.6 (and also does not show the Staples logo at the bottom right of the main GUI.

Have you tried to update using the link I have provided? Try installing NS using the latest ns method I gave. I know you said you spent enough time uninstalling ns and didn't want to use the work around I offered. If you use my method, it will not have the Staples Logo on it. I don't know if you would have to wait again with the next update or not. It shouldn't take long to uninstall the program and using www.norton.com/latestns is a quick process. If you have a bunch of custom firewall settings, then you may not want to use it.

I agree.  The free Comcast Norton Security Suite (NSS) is not just a Norton product with a company logo added to the GUI.  There are other feature changes in Comcast NSS that make it different from Norton Security Premium (see yank's post <here> in the Comcast forum under a different username), and that makes it even more baffling why it's taking so long for Symantec to push updates for these Staples-branded Norton products that only have a Staples logo added to the GUI.

Another update from a Symantec employee would be appreciated so affected users can make an informed decision about the best way to proceed. If floplot's suggested method <here> to reinstall with an offline v22.6 installer from the download servers (e.g., NS-EDS-Def-22.6.0.142-EN.exe) is only a temporary workaround to update to the latest version (which we don't know yet), some users affected by this problem might still have time to return their product for a full refund under Symantec's 60 day refund policy.

Would the Staples version be returnable under the Symantec 60 day return policy or under the Staples Return Policy?

Hi yank:

As far as I know, the Symantec 60-day money back guarantee will be usually be honoured if the user cannot return their Norton product to the retail partner where they originally purchased their product, as long as they still have a copy of the product activation key and sales receipt.

The support article Norton Product Refunds has a link titled "I purchased a product from a retail store".  That link will take you to the support article Product Returns that has instructions on how to download and submit a product return form.  Unfortunately, there's no downloadable product return form for retail purchases made in Latin America.

Now they have started a Beta while some of us have not even received the latest update...talk about misguided priorities!
