NU not defrag multiple drives

In previous versions of NU I could select several drives to be defragged. Then walk away and let it run overnight. With NU 16 I cannot select more than one drive to defrag. Why?

I have 3 physical drives, 2 have 2 partitions each, so that makes 5 virtual drives. In NU 16 I cannot setup more that one defrag command at a time and have to manually start each defrag for each drive. This also applies to "defrag on next boot" option. I have to reboot the computer 5 times to do a full deep defrag at boot for all my drives. What a pain!

Why will NU 16 only allow selection of one drive at a time to defrag?

Can it be fixed in an update to the program?

Re: NU not defrag multiple drives

If you select the Smart Defrag option, you should not need to run manual defrags. This feature will keep an eye on your fragmentation levels and fix as necessary.

Re: NU not defrag multiple drives

Well, that's how it is supposed to work. However, it has been my experience that every once in awhile, it is necessary to do a complete manual defrag at boot. NU 16 has also asked me to do a manual defrag on up to three of my drives at one time. I did not turn off auto-defrag, but the program evidentially found some reason for me to run defrag manually on those three drives. This request has occured about 3 times; sometimes on only C: Drive, sometimes on 2 drives.

Even if the program does not ask me to run a manual defrag, over time the auto-defrag just doesn't keep up. I can analyze a drive after a couple of weeks, and the block chart has no green blocks for directories or files on it. This would, I think, indicate that the drive was no longer in its best defrag condition. So I run a manual at boot. .

It would be great to defrag all drives during one single re-boot as we used to be able to do in previous versions of NU. Why has Norton taken away a good option that worked great? I would like to have this feature back. Is that possible?

Note, NU 16 is, in my opinion a big step backward. The UI is difficult to discern and on the dashboard, the indicator will not go over 50%. I will run every function manually and still it shows I'm only 50% optimized. I'm looking for another utility program - that is unless Norton gets this version to work as well as version 15 did. Come on, admit it, version 16 is full of bugs.

Re: NU not defrag multiple drives

While I can understand your points about disk defragging in NU16, if you have a license for NU15 there is nothing stopping you uninstalling NU16 and re-installing NU15.  Of course NU15 is not compatible with Windows 8/8.1.

Re: NU not defrag multiple drives

One other point to note.

With the current drive technology and the way that Windows and NTFS handle the data on the drives, defragging does not offer the performance increases that it used to on loder systems. It would probably only show up on a performance diagnostic program, and then only in increments that you would probably not be able to detect in the real world.

In fact, many system files are deliberately broken up by the NTFS system for better performance.

Re: NU not defrag multiple drives

Now that's new information.

So the old defrag problems are a thing of the past? The auto-optimization arranges data in a way other than consecutive blocks? Hmmm, something to look into. Thank you for the info. I'll do some research to find out more about what you have stated. Any suggested reading? Thanks again.

Yea - it's not compatable that's why I bought NU 16. So your suggestion is mute.

This site has a couple of explanations and some other links.
