Old Computer - No Norton Toolbar In Google Chrome

I have a very old computer and consequently, I am running Windows XP Home SP3, Norton Internet Security 2012 version 19.9.1.44, Internet Explorer 8, and Google Chrome version 34.0.1847.137

In Internet Explorer 8, I have Norton Toolbar, Norton Identity Protection, and Norton Vulnerability Protection add-ons enabled.

However, in Google Chrome I have no Norton Toolbar, in fact I have no extensions listed at all.

Should I have Norton Toolbar extensions in Google Chrome, and if so, how do I add them.

Re: Old Computer - No Norton Toolbar In Google Chrome

Hi PinguJohn,

The Norton Toolbar must now be obtained from the Google Chrome Web store, as explained at the bottom ot this Product Update Announcement .

Here is the KB Article about Enable Norton Identity Safe toolbar in Google Chrome, which however requires a Norton product version 21x or 20x.

So before I suggest you to update your NIS, I have to ask if you have a specific reason for using NIS v19.9.1.44?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Rainbow_2

Thanks for your reply.

The specific reason for still using NIS v19.9.1.44 was the numerous posts on the NIS forum reporting problems experienced when using later versions of NIS on very old computers.  I purchased my computer in 2002.

I would very much appreciate you views on this.

Re: Old Computer - No Norton Toolbar In Google Chrome

PinguJohn,

I have only a few year’s experience with pcs, therefore I think I’m not the right user to ask, anyway I personally prefer to have the latest version as I believe that the most updated technology can give my system the best overall protection.

Of course each user has to decide according to their specific situation. On the other hand, if you want to have the toolbar in Chrome you have to update as said in the KB Article…perhaps you could try updating and go back to the old version shouldn’it work to your satisfaction?

In case you decide to update, you can do It from within your NIS:  main UI >Support > New Version Check (or Check for New Version from the Norton icon in the systray).

When finished, run LiveUpdate a few times, rebooting as requested, until you see the message “LiveUpdate finished – No updates found”.  At the end I’d reboot a last time as it never hurts…

In case you use Identity Safe, export your data in both .csv and .dat formats prior to updating, just as a precaution.

However, since I just noticed that our Guru Yank, who knows much more than I do about the matter , in this post suggested a user with an old version (but later than yours) to run the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool rather than going via the Update Center, I’m asking @yank   to please jump in and advise you on the best route to follow in case you decide to update.

So stay tuned! ... And thanks in advance to Yank!

Re: Old Computer - No Norton Toolbar In Google Chrome

Hi PinguJohn and Rainbow_2,

I do believe that updating an older system to a more current version of Norton is beneficial as Norton makes an effort to ensure each new version of Norton products are lighter on the system than the previous.  Thus version 21.3.0.12 (current version) would be lighter on the older system than an older version (v 19) of NIS.

I feel the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool is the easiest tool to use not only for older systems, but for any upgrade/uninstall/reinstall.  It retains your settings and also your IDS afe Data.

That said I am not a Chrome user, so I can not assist in that area.   @Rainbow_2 is far more knowledgeable in that area than I am - so I will throw this back to them!

Re: Old Computer - No Norton Toolbar In Google Chrome

Thanks, Yank

PinguJohn, it's up to you now... If you decide to update, this is the link to use www.norton.com/nrnr .

Before running it, please read the "Before you begin" note.

After running the tool, run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as requested, until no updates are available. When finished I'd reboot anyway.

In case you use Identity Safe, export your data in both .csv and .dat formats prior to updating, just as a precaution.

After that you can follow the  "Enable Norton Identity Safe toolbar in Google Chrome" KB Article

If you decide to proceed, please let us know how things go.

Re: Old Computer - No Norton Toolbar In Google Chrome

Thanks for your replies folks

I am beginning to find that a number of programs I run are now not being updated to the latest version anymore because of Windows XP and also my old hardware is no longer supported.  Google Chrome is just one example of this.

I am beginning to seriously consider biting the bullet and purchase a new PC.
