Online Family for Windows XP not blocking anything

I just installed Online Family in a Mac and in two Windows XP machines I have at home. In the Mac it works very nicely. But in the Windows XP machines, I can see the site [Removed] (or others similar I tried)  is not blocked in any of my kids' accounts (whereas it is blocked on the Mac). I installed a local account for each of my kids and set "block sites" in the settings page. Most importantly, the settings page says my kids are protected in all 3 machines and when I login in their Windows XP accounts the OnlineFamily message indicates they are protected.

Unfortunately, they are not. Any pornographic site I tried went through without any message, just as if the software wasn't installed, when all messgaes say it is installed and running OK.

I would REALLY appreciate your help here.

Re: Online Family for Windows XP not blocking anything

Hi BigHelpNeeded,

Have you tried to uninstall/reinstall Norton Safety Minder to see if it helps?

If it doesn't help,  I would be more than happy to setup a remote desktop access and work together with you on this.  You're welcome to send me a private message or an email for details.  You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/norton/profile?user.id=15038.  Please also answer the following questions.

1. What Security products are installed on the PC?

2. What Web Browser and version(IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc) do you use?

3. What edition of the Windows XP do you use, Professional or Home?

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Online Family for Windows XP not blocking anything

Katie,

I am sorry to inform you, but after hours of struggle to uninstall Symantec Endpoint Detection (which I did suscessfully) I can tell you the problem remains exactly the same: I can browse whetever I want and Norton Online Family doesn't block anyhting at all. This is very frustrating: the page with the compatibility list of security programs indicates, actually, that Online Family does run with the latest Symantec Endpoint Detection. If this is true, why did you suggest to uninstall?? There is some other issue here. I am using both the latest Mozilla Firefox and IE 8 on an XP machine WITHOUT any symantec antivirus running.

And by the way (as if this were not enough trouble): I said before that in the Mac, OnlineFamily works great. Well, this is as long as you use Safari. My kids installed Firefox and when I was trying to "extend monitoring" to Mozilla I get the error:

"Could not add extension to Firefox.....because it cannot the extension to your copy of Firefox. Please download the latest version of Firefox"

which is exaclty what I did! I do have the latest version. Without monitoring Firefox your program is also useless in the Mac.

Re: Online Family for Windows XP not blocking anything

Ok I will ask again, what is the settings for web, do you have it set to block or warn?

When you say it's not blocking anything, what exactly are the steps you are doing to reproduce the issue? Are you logged in as your child (the one being monitored)?

Re: Online Family for Windows XP not blocking anything

Matt,

I was of course logged in my son's accounts, and I do have them blocked, not only monitored. I have to go through the pain of uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Detection, and not until I uninstall and re-install Safety Minder that it seems to work now in my Windows XP systems.

However, now the problem is my Mac: it is not working for Mozilla (although it works for Safari). Please see my previous post. Could you please advise what to do on the Mac?

It seems to me WE are helping debug this program (i.e., we are beta-testers proxies), that is why this is free.

Re: Online Family for Windows XP not blocking anything

I am unclear why it was a pain to uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection, in fact we do support the latest version. I am guessing this is a corporate machine so your IT department should be able to make sure you have the latest version.

As Katie pointed out, this is a known issue with older versions of SEP.

It is also documented that the Mac version only supports Safari and does not support other browsers.

And to be clear you are not debugging our program, you are running into documented known issues.

Matt
