Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

I've joined the forum through frustration. I am a long time Norton subscriber who realised a few years ago that the renewal was becoming an unrealistic amount when I could walk into any PC shop and buy a new package at a quarter of the cost.

Now with online retailers such as Amazon I can save even more. How do Norton justify almost £100 to renew when I could buy it for £11 - 21.00 depending on how many devices I need it for.? Am I being naive in thinking it's about time Norton rewarded long term users with reductions or are they happy for us to mess about renewing via the cheaper method?

Not customer friendly is it?

Rant over - any answers to this dilemma ?????

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

Welcome to the wonderful world of marketing.

Symantec sells its products directly and through retail partners. The partners and retailers are free to set the price at whatever level they are comfortable with for their profit margins.

The price for a subscription Renewal is often more expensive and reflects a "Convenience Fee" for those that do not want to spend time searching for lower pricing, or risk forgetting to renew the subscription and risk losing their security protection.

This has been discussed many times on these forums, so Symantec is aware of the users concerns.

Just be sure to purchase from an authorized retailer.  There are many cases where unscrupulous online sellers resell a product key to multiple buyers.  Symantec has ways of discovering and deactivating such illegitimate installations.

Cheers for the guidance, I'm going via Amazon again. Hopefully that will avoid this kind of scenario - there are always sharks out there just waiting for victims.

Such a pity a big company thinks it's okay to rip off it's customers who may not be so tech savvy. Unfortunately I do prefer their product over their competitors.... darn.

Thanks for response , Izzy

Also be sure you are comparing the same product version. If you currently have the Premium edition and use the backup feature, that is the only version you should be looking at. The ones with fewer device coverage do not have the backup feature.

Cheers - it's the only format of Norton I prefer. Back up is crucial. I had a laptop go on me 2 years ago and all I lost was a couple of hours work. Daft not to opt for this option really (although I still do a local back up - just in case)

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

Had a wonderful few sessions with the Chat this morning on forcing my renewal early (I'll be on vacation and I never use the auto-renew).

My renewal price is 19.99 GBP (clicked on 'renew' button), BUT it states it starts upon payment (not good), which is unusual because renewal has always appended to the existing subscription.   Got on chat and could not get a straight answer.  Chat said renewal started immediately, I asked if the same applies to Amazon, etc...(because for the life of me I can't remember and things change and I have several subscription for programs); they said yes, those start immediately too (really, that caught me by surprise)!).  Chatted to someone else at Norton's and they offered my a 69.99 GBP renewal price (super!! I can pay 350% more!!!); then they offered a discount to 34.99 (yea a huge discount -- lol).  Had to send them a link to prove the 19.99 offer and after a brief consult among chat colleague they offered 19.99.  GREAT!! But I asked a them a question and not a on the spot renewal  (which may or may not start immediately because they never answered my question).  I would never give my CC to chat any way because that's just not safe.

Gotta love it, Norton just keeps getting better and better.

Long time Norton's user  (and I mean loooooong).

How do you can do this via Amazon? Any links or some guidance  ?

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

I had asked if the same applied to a Norton's subscription purchased from Amazon.  Norton's is available from Amazon (just search it).  I was surprised by their answer that it applied also (and I am not sure I believe it either).

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

I have Norton on 3 devices which are PCs and this is a 3  license product.  I want to move up to the IS Premium and get 10 licenses.  I can get the license for much much cheaper at Amazon.  My renewal date is 10/15/18 so I plan to buy it from Amazon and wait until almost the end date of my current install so I don't lose many days.

My question is:  do I have to uninstall the current installed products or will the new Amazon Norton just install over the old installations?

That depends on exactly what product you now have, and whether you want the backup feature of the Norton Security Premium product.

If you are using Norton 360 now, and have kept it up to date through LiveUpdates, functionally you already have the Norton Security Premium code installed. Entering the new product key will just allow you to use more devices in that subscription.

If you do not already have the backup feature installed, you can still just use the product key for NS Premium to renew what is on your system. But if you do want the backup feature, you would need to install NS Premium. If you download the installer from the instructions you receive from Amazon, you can just run that. It will take care of removing the old version and will then install the new. Just be sure that after the install, you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

I have the Norton Internet Security Vista Subscription Renewal (2 Year Subscription) with 3 licenses for Windows (10).  I keep the product fully patched and Live Update runs on auto.  I do NOT use the backup function as I've used Acronis True Image for over 10 years and like that product.  I have Norton's auto-renew turned off.  I have the product installed on 3 different PCs.

Thanks for your help.

As you have the older Norton Internet Security, NIS,  you can just install the newer Norton Security over top of your NIS. Depending on how many devices you need to protect, and because you do not use the backup feature anyway, you might be able to save a little more money by getting the Norton Security Deluxe for 5 devices.

Functionally, all versions are identical in the anti malware features, so the decision comes down to the number of devices you need to protect.

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

Norton needs to lower the price for their loyal auto-renewal customers effective immediately! I've been a Norton user since 1997 and to charge $94.99 for the "privilege" of auto-renewal is ridiculous. We all know I can go to any online retailer selling Norton products and get a legitimate renewal code for at least $50.00 less, so why do they insist on screwing over their regular customers? I could go and cancel my auto-renewal which is set to kick in on 10/20/2018 and they'll respond with a plea to keep me as a customer by waving a $25.00 Amazon gift card in my face. Then we'll repeat the same process next year, right? No, I want a price reduction and not a gift card. Ball is in your court, Norton.

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

Unfortunately, Norton uses a similar business/pricing model used by many other organizations. Communications companies give a great promotional price to get you to sign up, then after the promo period is up, the price goes up to the 'regular' price. Unless you call to try to get a better deal. In Norton's case, the 'call for a better deal' is the purchase a new product key each year.

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

Welcome to the club - been with Norton since late 90's too. Initially fell for this costly renew saga until I saw prices in PC stores and then went online. Now again (as I have done for previous years ) I skirt around Norton by buying it new elsewhere.

When it's all said and done it's my money and I can spend it where I choose.

The gift card is an under priced carrot.

FYI

It's one of today's deal of the day on Amazon - all my problems solved for a mere £21.00 instead of £98.

Bargain.

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

This is ridiculous, $116 for auto renewal!!!! Didn't tell me mine would be ending soon. Just got it in the email they charged my account. If I had known I was going to be charged that much I would have changed the auto renewal....which I will now.for future use..but that is totally insane...3 times the amount you can get it on Amazon.  So if I cancel and then renew thru Amazon....do I get $116 back???

You can request a refund from Support  within 60 days of your purchase. Then you can make your new purchase from any reputable retailer.

Not sure where you got the support link from but this one should work for you.    www.norton.com/contactcs

Re: Outrageous cost to renew vs buying new !!

 Well Symantec/Norton lose

Today with less than 24 hrs to go I have indeed updated a new key at a bargain price from Amazon. I'm not bothered losing less than 24hrs  on the last key as the next year includes an extra day (LEAP YEAR !!!! - lol)

I still think Symantec are doing wrong by their long term customers. It's a brilliant product but I think ripping off so called "lazy" renewals (many of whom aren't tech savvy) is a shame. Maybe we could start a corporate #MeToo campaign..... yeah I know keep dreaming they really like their profits at our expense.

#Ripoff

I am however encouraged by comments here that some are aware and perhaps forums can spread the word.

Izzy831:  How exactly did you update.  I'm assuming you didn't uninstall and then installed the new product.  Did you hit the renew button?  If so, did it have an option for "I have a key"  or something.  I'd like to get this process down as I have to renew before mine expires in 45 days.

Like you and the others, I am tired of being taken advantage of just because I'm loyal to the product.  We should be the ones getting a break!

Looks like peterweb beat me to the answer.

You could try Norton.com/setup also - that worked for me plus no uninstalling nonsense involved.

Good luck with your wise choice of a cheaper option
