Parental control daily time limit sees internet usage when devices are blocked

The parental control Daily Time Limit is supposed to allow devices assigned to users with this control to access the internet for a specific number of hours each day.  Since installing my Core several months ago (ie across multiple versions of firmware), the App has shown usage occurring even when all devices are blocked during "Bedtime".  In several instances, the daily time limit would be reached before the end of Bedtime, resulting in devices not being usable until I extended the daily time limit.  This time consumption occurs both during the day and night (ie regardless of whether it is "Bedtime").  I reported this incident by shaking the smartphone running the Core App a month or two ago, and am posting it here in hopes that it will be addressed.

Hello Geeky Customer - Shake your phone again to send logs. In the comments field add your Core serial number, your forums user name, a description of your issue and link to this forums thread. Once done send a PM to Gayathri_R with your Core serial number and again link to this forums thread. That should tie the logs to you.

Cheers

GC, I failed to ask what Core app you are using and version just to make sure you have the latest. Also the thought occurred that a Core power cycle may clear corrupted memory. If you have the time power down your Core and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Power up again and recheck for your issue after giving it at least 5 minutes to check itself.

Hello.  I am using the latest IOS app version which is 1.27.  I have power cycled the Core in the past without success in fixing the problem.

Re: Parental control daily time limit sees internet usage when devices are blocked

I think the problem with this feature is that it is counting time connected to the network and not necessarily usage time. For example if you have set a usage of 5 hrs daily and lets say your child gets home from school at 4 by 9 his usage time is exhausted if his bed time is 10.   That is the reason that you are using up your daily limit during bedtime (which it should not) because the device is still connected to the network even though you are not using it.  It might be a little difficult to determine connected time versus actual usage time.

MannyT, that makes sense. If GC can power down the device in question for one night once the time limit is reached we can see if its a matter of data vice actual usage in that way.  At that time the device should show as having previously been on the network when checked the next morning.

Re: Parental control daily time limit sees internet usage when devices are blocked

The Core is perceiving usage even during the night when it is blocking internet access for all the managed devices.  Since usage time can only be determined by monitoring managed devices' active connections to the internet (this is a network device and there is no endpoint monitoring agent on managed devices), usage should be zero when network access is blocked.  This should be the case even if managed devices are attempting to access the network while blocked - counting time during when one has no network access against one's access quota would not make sense.

I do think your theory of what is using up the time is likely.  One of my managed devices is an Android TV, and it is likely accessing the network periodically to perform background tasks.  Since it takes so long to boot up, I'm hesitant to unplug it as an experiment, though.  Regardless, it's blocked access attempts after hours should not count toward the quota.

Just a thought concerning your Android TV, on the Core app pause the internet for that device when you are done using it for the day. I think we are seeing "data" usage more so than access time since that device would be considered another wifi enabled device on the network.
