Parental Controls

I tried to setup a child so no internet after certain time, but did not block any content (that's not my worry), on an assigned device (android). Core says it cannot identify the device and says IoT devices should NOT be setup as such (see attached image). Even though I hit allow, it fails w/unable to create. Although it knows all about it; it's a smartPhone, Samsung, model # and OS (see attached image) it won't allow me to do it. Anyone knows anything on this? Thnx in advance for any direction!

Re: Parental Controls

Jim, select the device in question under devices in the app. Scroll down to the area labeled "Device Details". Have a look at "Type" and open it. Reselect the type of device it should be and save. See if that makes a difference.

Re: Parental Controls

But it IS the correct device, see attached image in original post. But the parental control module of the app DOESN’T see it! Thnx!

Re: Parental Controls

I would remove him from "People" and allow the app to no longer attach him to that device. Then add him back. I setup a bogus person shall we say Andy and added to People. When I assigned a device to the name the same device warning appeared as in your second screenshot with one exception. I had the words Cancel and Assign in that dialogue box. Maybe starting fresh will solve the issue for you.

Re: Parental Controls

Prior to setting him up, there were & still are, no people. I initiated it as you said, gave name then it asked what device then... I also noticed, once it errored out, it would not allow you to set it up again. Have to start all over again. He was the initial parental setup! Hope that helps! ... and thank you for helping!

You are most welcome. Let us know how you made out with the re-assigning. Here is a guide in case you need to reflect on anything while doing so: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v118380545_core_en_us

Re: Parental Controls

Attached you'll see there are NO people. I followed the directions in the link you sent me, and still and no avail.

Attached is the "no people" screenshot and the error (I caught it this time w/the error msg) screenshot.

Hope this helps, to help me LOL!

What the .... Yesterday, I created a zip of the images, and the forum says NO zip, only png. Now I tried to upload png and says only pdf or zip, what gives?

It is easier if you use inline images.

Re: Parental Controls

I think you are missing the shared user.  I have a user called shared that I never created and I think all the devices that are unassigned get placed there.  In the original error message that you had about the device I don't think it was talking about Jayden's phone there was another device on top that has a ? mark and that is the one that wasn't finished being identified.

Re: Parental Controls

Well, I screwed something up! I tried to assign type on devices w/o type, now those devices no longer have internet access & I get the unable to get shared data... So I created a “shared” people, full access, no age & no assigned devices. It failed just like my intended people & still getting the error upon app launch! Help! PS one of those inop devices is my land line!

Re: Parental Controls

Have you tried assigning all the the devices to the "Shared" people?  If I remove an assigned device from an assigned user it automatically goes into "Shared".  If I go and assign to the user it then disappears from "Shared" and goes to the assigned user.  I would give it a try in case you haven't already.

Re: Parental Controls

I do not have ANY users. But I’ll try to assign all questionable devices to the shared user, which btw don’t exist, but I’ll try re-creating. Thnx!

Re: Parental Controls

Try deleting and reinstalling the app before you reset the router.

Re: Parental Controls

Weird my shared user doesn't show up on main screen.   I think it might be a good idea then to do a factory reset on the router and I would erase all settings and start from scratch.  Something is not right unfortunately.

Re: Parental Controls

I was afraid of that! I’ll do it tomorrow morning when there are no users! I’ll post results! BTW is there a link regarding “shared” people? Thnx!

Re: Parental Controls

Here are some screenshots of people and errors...

Question...

When I do a reset, wiping out all data, do I log into the app as existing setup, or new?

Shall I do it via the pushbutton or the app?

I want this to have maximum effect (hopefully resolution) on my problem. Thnx

Re: Parental Controls

If you notice my shared picture below it is not like your shared.   Your has only one person as opposed to the one in my phone that has 2 persons.  I think the difference is that you created a person called 'Shared' as compared to a group called 'Shared' and thus error for no shared group data.  I don't know of a way to create the shared group unfortunately.  Where did you see the link on the 'shared' that you mention? The picture didn't come out to good it has like a ghost effect.  It should only be '2 persons' and it looks like '4 persons'.

Re: Parental Controls

Skoutariotis When you factory reset the Core wipe all the data and settings to the Core so it will remove it from the Cloud. Perform a NEW setup. Doing the restore with the button or app will serve the same purpose. Just a note - If you want to reuse the passwords for your networks jot them down before doing the reset so you will have them for the setup.

One thing to remember after the setup is complete. When you connect a laptop or computer to the network is DOESN'T assign it to a specific person and will therefore go under People as "Shared". ALL unassigned devices will appear when you touch SHARED and appear in a listing. When you want to setup parental controls go to "People", add a person THEN assign a device to that person. Hope that helps. https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v118380545_core_en_us

Re: Parental Controls

MannyT, thnx, but my guess is, there IS something scrambled in mine. I never had such screen & yes, I did create a people “shared” I figured it was wrong, but I have never known of a group “shared”! In regards to the link, I’m LOOKING for it & I thought you had one since you know so much about the group “shared”. Thnx! SoulAsylum, that’s how it WAS setup, but I never saw a group, neither did I assign a device to anyone & I DID set up the new people, never worked. BTW, after restart shall I login as existing or new setup or no option with wipe? I done it already in the past, but I don’t recall, sorry! Anyone can answer this is SoulAsylum is not avail, I’ll be doing it in an hour or so! Thnx to all!

Re: Parental Controls

Skoutarotis I AM available AND watching the thread.  WIPE all the existing data and totally reset to remove the old configuration from the cloud. If you don't the Core will download the previous settings and restore them. When you have the factory reset done, create your networks and password them. Then on your wired and wireless laptops/computers connect them to Core wifi/wired networks as applicable. They will NOT be assigned to any person at that time. They WILL show in the "People" area as "Shared Unlimited" BY DEFAULT. PLEASE SEE SCREENSHOT.  All devices not having been assigned to a person will show there. If you then follow this guideline link below to setup parental controls you will have done things correctly. In the same area you click the "ADD" button to add a person and assign a specific device to that person and setup controls.

Re: Parental Controls

Skoutariotis, I'm just a user like yourself.  I was just comparing how my screen looked to what you posted.  My knowledge of the group "shared" was just my observations from using the app.  What is also confusing to me is how your group "shared" got deleted, since I can't find a way to delete it like I can the users.  I agree with you something did get scrambled.  Hope everything works correctly after your reset.

Re: Parental Controls

Done! Back up again, and the shared group is back, see attached images. But, I will do nothing until Monday. I'll give it time to settle and update the types, etc...
