PartitionMagic 8.0 problem: lost partitions?

Hi

I started with a drive partitioned a while back into 3 with partition letters C, E and F and have just attempted to merge E and F using PartitionMagic (as F was empty and no longer required). However something went wrong and I ended with an error message. I have now lost reference to both partitions E and F. PartitionMagic shows the drive partitioned as follows:

Local drive (C) Type:NTFS               120,000 Mb  Used:104,108Mb    Unused:15,892Mb

(*)                       Type:Unallocated     4,996Mb      Used: 0.0                  Unused: 0.0

(*)                       Type:Extended         113,474Mb   Used: 113,474Mb   Unused:0.0

Data files(*.)     Type:NTFS                113,474Mb   Used: 63,374Mb     Unused:50,100Mb

Not sure what to do next so any help would be very welcome. Thanks!!

Re: PartitionMagic 8.0 problem: lost partitions?

Mike,

Let's see what we can do. Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management? How large was the former E: partition? How large was the former F: partition?

I guess no-one told you but there are two dangerous things you can do with Partition Magic. Run it from Windows (instead of boot disks) and use the Merge function.

Also, never use PM at all with a 2048 sector aligned Win7 partition.

Thanks Brian - advice much appreciated.

I have inserted an image of Disk Management below. The Unallocated section is I think equivalent in size to the former F: partition while the Data files made up the former E: partition.

It's going to take a while for us to see the screenshot.

Can you also tell us what version of windows you are using, and can you also attach a screenshot of ptedit.exe

You should be able to find ptedit.exe in the partition magic\Utilities folder

I can see it now and it doesn't look too bad.

Why don't you hold of on the screenshot of ptedit

Mike, do you remember how much data you had on the E drive before you did this?

Was it about 60-62GB?

Mike,

"Data files" partition doesn't have a drive letter. Right click in the Disk Management rectangle,  Change drive letter and paths, Add, choose your drive letter of E: That partition should be fixed.

Boot from a Partition Magic boot disk, right click in the unallocated space, Undelete. Did it find a partition?

Re: PartitionMagic 8.0 problem: lost partitions?

Brilliant - thanks Brian. Re-allocating the drive letter has made the drive accessible again and all the data seem to be uncorrupted.

I have tried to boot using a Partition Magic boot disk but for some reason my PC does not want to do this (although it is set up to look for a CD before booting off the hard drive) so I have not recovered the unallocated space. I have resisted the temptation to try to recover this part of the drive using Partition Magic running in Windows XP following your advice but as the unallocated space only amounts to 4Gb or so it isnt a big deal if I lose it.

Dave - thanks also for your input.

Re: PartitionMagic 8.0 problem: lost partitions?

Mike, that's great news.

I'd try a GParted boot CD. Get the Stable release.

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

There is probably no partition hiding in the unallocated space so I'd resize the OS partition which will make it 122 GB. The OS partition needs a bit more free space.

Re: PartitionMagic 8.0 problem: lost partitions?

Hi:),

Mac undelete softwareto recover missing partition is the best recovery tool that i have used. This software can recover files from FAT16, FAT32, HFS+, HFSX formatted Mac volumes. Different types of files can be recognized and recovered on the basis of their unique signature. This software can also recover files from volumes that are not able to mount or fails to mount. This software supports Mac OS X 10.5.X and above versions including Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. This software has in-built scanning algorithms to recover files from missing or deleted volumes. Download free demo version to evaluate recovery results. If you are satisfied with recovery results then use full version of this software
