pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Early today I was forced, yet again to turn off my laptop using the off button then at 8pm when I turned it back on I got a black screen and this.

NTLDR is missing

No matter what I did I could not get the laptop to boot up until I found in my acer bios’

HOLD ALT + F10

This forced the laptop into recovery mode which totally wiped my C: Drive clean….

My laptop comes with Norton’s 2006 though I've added what updates there are I keep getting this.

LU1847: LiveUpdate could not determine if there is an update for this product because the update list for this product is corrupted.

Plus when I try to log into my account it says I’m not on line..

Q: is there a link to the last version of Norton before this latest version otherwise I fear you'll cause the same problem all over again..

Oh man! That really sucks! I hope you had all your documents backed up. Are you using any disk imaging or recovery software like Norton Ghost or Macrium Reflect? It saves so much time in recovering from these kinds C: drive corruption problems. I'm able to recover my C: drive in less that 10 minutes. If you need more info let me know and I'll give you more details as to how to set this up.

Could you please clarify your current situation.  Symantec employee Mohan_G posted <here> on 10-Jul-2015 requesting that you send him diagnostic logs, so our assumption is that you are already receiving assistance from Symantec.

The Microsoft Support article Windows may not start and you may receive an "NTLDR is missing" error message if Windows is not up-to-date and there are too many files in the root folder suggests that your original problem with Windows XP was not fixed.  If Windows has now restored your computer to it's original factory settings of 2006 then all your software, including your Windows OS and Norton installation, is extremely out-of-date.  Without being able to access your computer remotely or look at diagnostic logs, which Symantec support can do, it's almost impossible for users in this forum to determine the current status of your Windows and Norton installations and provide advice on the best way forward.

Though no mention of the Chkdsk / Disk Tools / Norton Disk Doctor problem, which seems to be related to the shutdown problem.

The Norton Toolbar browser extension that comes bundled with Norton Security already includes Norton Identity Safe, so if you found Norton Identity Safe listed as a separate entity in your Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) then you likely had an old copy of Identity Safe Standalone (IDSS) that should have been removed before Norton Security was installed.  You also mentioned problems with ChkDsk and Norton Disk Doctor in takfuji's thread Norton Security w/Latest Update Blocks Win-XP Shutdown.  I'm not sure, but I believe Norton Disk Doctor is a discontinued product and is no longer supported - unless you have Norton Utilities (NU) installed on your computer and are referring to the Disk Doctor feature that comes with NU.

Since you are using different Norton products than kingofscotland it might make more sense to start a new thread in the forum and list your Windows OS (I assume Win XP SP3) and all current Norton products (including version numbers) installed on your machine.  It sounds like you need to wipe all the remnants of your old Norton installations using the Norton Removal Tool before reinstalling NS (and possibly NU) but we need to know exactly what Norton products you have.  It would also be helpful to know whether you still use Identity Safe to manage your login passwords, and if so, whether you use a local or online vault to store your passwords.

Update:
1. The 22.5.2.15 still has the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I uninstalled Norton Security via the Control Panel.
I had to force a shutdown at the end of the uninstall process.
The computer rebooted and worked fine after removing Norton Security. No hangs at Windows Shutdown and now hangs at Chkdsk C: /f!
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

2. The CLEAR system did NOT have the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I obtained the latest version of Norton Security from www.norton.com/setup, v22.5.2.15.
I installed as per instruction
I rebooted as per instructions
After reboot the system hangs at Windows shutdown and hangs at Chkdsk C: /f.
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

3. The 22.5.2.15 still has the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I used the Norton Removal Tool to clean all Norton product off my Windows XP system.
I manually cleared out the files remaining files.
I manually went through the Registry to clear out Norton and Symantec references.
The clean system works fine! No hangs at Windows Shutdown and now hangs at Chkdsk C: /f!
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

4. The cleared CLEAR system did NOT have the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
Again, I obtained the latest version of Norton Security from www.norton.com/setup, v22.5.2.15.
Again, I installed as per instruction
Again, I rebooted as per instructions
Again, after reboot the system hangs at Windows shutdown and hangs at Chkdsk C: /f.
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

It's clear to me, and all the users having these Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk problem, that the cause is Norton Security. None of the other Norton products had this problem. None of the other versions of Norton Internet Security or Norton Antivirus had this problem. Norton / Symantec needs to fix this!

Since you didn't specify which Norton product, here are all the latest v21 download links...

After the installation, remember to go into settings and disable "Automatic Download of New Version", ASAP ...
After the "New Version" option is disabled, run, and then continue to run Liveupdate until it reports "No Updates Found".

At one time Norton was allowing a limited-duration variance for this, but I don't know if that is still being allowed.

You could try sending one of the Admins a PM, perhaps to Tony_Weiss, explaining your situation and see what he says...

Sadly, even if there was such a link, it wouldn't do you much good AlMejias...

As soon as it installed and ran just a few Liveupdates, you'd be right back where you are presently, because the v22 to v25 update cannot be disabled on either NS product.

Ah, OK. Thanks for that info!  I was not able to find that setting in Norton Security and this explains why.

So back to my other question. Will my new Norton Security key work on my older Norton Internet Security software?

I have heard in the past of Norton and XP having a problem, it is some time ago so the threads also will be.

The latest version of Norton is 22.5.2.15, perhaps running Live Update a few times may trigger the download of the latest version.

If not a fresh install of Norton from your Account will install the latest version, I don't think (may be wrong) that the "New Version Check" in the Help menu on he main Norton UI would give you the latest version as it is not a major upgrade in version numbers e.g. from 22.x.x.xxx to 23.x.x.xxx although, it may be worth a try just in case I'm wrong.

I see from your previous posts that you're running Norton Security (NS) v22.5.2.15 on a Win XP SP3 computer.  Unfortunately, Symantec employee Tony Weiss' post HOT ISSUES AND FIXES - NS/NSBU 22.5 still list the following as a known issue:
     "2) Windows XP operating system unable to shutdown normally after updating to 22.5"

Have you been contacted by Symantec employee Mohan_G since he posted a reply to you <here> in this thread?  If not, I'd suggest that you send him a private message (PM) by going to his forum profile at http://community.norton.com/en/users/mohang and clicking "Send this user a private message" to remind him that you're still experiencing shutdown issues.  Note that you have to be signed in to the forum in order to send and read PMs.

Apostolos reported <here> that a clean re-install of NS v22 solved the shutdown hang on a XP computer (N360/NIS/NAV v22 users have the option of downgrading back to v21) so it appears that this v22 bug does not affect 100% of XP users.  Let us know if you'd like to try a clean re-install of NS v22.5.2.15 while you're waiting for a reply from Mohan_G and we'll post step-by-step instructions, although there's no guarantee that a clean re-install will help if your system is affected by this bug.

Just a clarification, the post of mine you linked above, mentions that I did a clean reinstall of NS just to have a fresh copy, NOT because I had shutdown problems on my XP pc.  I never had shutdown issues with NS even before the clean reinstall, clearly the issue does not affect all XP systems.

Thanks for the clarification. After following this thread for almost two months I'm starting to loose track of everyone's input (or just going senile ).  We aren't making much progress here, so I hope Symantec has contacted Win XP users affected by this bug and asked them to provide diagnostic logs.

I had the same problem. My solution was to uninstall NIS. I downloaded NIS 21.7.0.11 and installed (the link may be mentioned in this thread?). I then unchecked the option to Automatically Update the version (not the signatures). So far so good.

I'm having the same Windows Shutdown Freeze and Chkdsk Freeze problems with Norton Security.
I'm running Windows XP Pro 32bit with all the Service Packs and updates to date.
The physical drive is a 36GB Seagate SCSI drive with 2 partitions.
C: is a primary partition set at 15GB formatted as Fat32.
D: is a logical partition set at 19.22GB formatted as NTFS.
