Phony Pop-Up During Start-Up?

Hi

A series of events leads me to question a pop-up that occurs on start-up. It asks me what app I want to use to open file degeraqnize.kvyzj.  I can't find the file using Windows searches to do a Norton scan on it.  Does anyone know what this is?  If it is malware then how do I get rid of it? I tried Norton Power Eraser and a full scan after I first saw it come up (several days ago)

Thanks for any help

What series of events do you think are involved with this?

Is there any indication in the pop up of where the file is located?

If possible, try to get a screenshot of the message next time it comes up and post it here.

Instructions to post screenshots can be found here

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

ODW. Have a look inside your Norton history for an indication something is being detected. Also in your Norton settings set your boot time protection to aggressive. Reboot and see if Norton grabs something. IF you can get something we can look at please post the screenshot with the instructions peterweb gave.

Cheers

Re: Phony Pop-Up During Start-Up?

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately due to my cardinal mistake of clicking on yes to the window question) I don't have a screen shot of the message on start up, only the error message from Adobe saying it could not open the particular file in question. It didn't say what folder it was in.

I do have my antivirus settings as SoulAsylum suggested. But going to the history of security items was interesting and maybe helpful. For the past several days Norton has blocked attempts to get to the NortonSecurity.exe file in my programs file. The interesting thing is that it identified several seemingly legit "actors" that all tried to do the same thing.

There was one other thing I didn't understand. It may be normal, but Norton listed under info that it was protecting my connection to Teredo Tunnelling Pseudo-Interface.  It had an IP address of fe80::38cc.28bcf:b81b:9248%4. Thing is that the History showed that a similar IP address with the same name had disappeared. Is this part of normal restart? my xFinity router/modem has been dropping out even after a couple off resets. It automatically reconnects after a bit.

Do these items give anyone a clue?

Thanks ODW

Re: Phony Pop-Up During Start-Up?

ODW I take it you have the Comcast/Xfinity security suite installed. I would first run Malwarebytes to check for malware. Perform live updates on your Norton product then tell us what the version is when done.

Referring to you router disconnecting, since your xfinity device is dropping. if you haven't changed the default login name and password to access the router settings via web browser you should do that, as well as changing your Wifi encryption to WPA2 and a very strong passcode then reboot the router. You could also have a simple service connection issue which xfinity is well known for having. I had them for years with nothing but constant service drops galore.

The Teredo Tunnelling Pseudo-Interface scenario is normal UNLESS the info is a warning in red. That would suggest there is an issue needing addressed regarding malware. Malwarebytes should remediate things if that is the case as it will look for things Norton doesn't scan for.
