Please change the way "advertising" is being blocked

Some of you may remember me from another thread.

I've had numerous issues about viewing certain sites all because of advertising.

Now I understand some advertising is bad.  A person can go to a website and some advertisements might be a half cleavaged chick trying to get some people to play a game called Ebony or whatever.

I understand there are some advertisements trying to get people to sign up for Personals

But there has to be levels of advertising that the system blocks, otherwise why bother?

I've had Norton Safety Minder for 4 months + now; and 90% of my "Allowed Websites" on the list is being blocked because of a category I had selected.  Now it is to my understanding that regardless of the category you selected "allowed websites" mean just that; it bypasses your categories and allows you to view the site.

Today in question is Oregons Northwest Cable News @ http://www.nwcn.com/news/oregon

Upon loading the page; which it will load. Yes there are some advertisements:

Chevy Cruze Vehicle  42mpg highway

Google Offers (beta) looks likes maps though

Those look like the only 2; after disabling Advertising let me pull up the link (s) that I wanted to view

Oh; maybe its Flash Advertising that Norton has an issue with? (main site didnt give me flash advertisements)

First link was a Flash Advertisement to again "Chevy Cruze"

Another link had advertisment about Mt Ranier Spring Retreat

Hmm also looks like theres some small picture links thats associated with "autos", "degrees" (school), "home refinance",  and "auto insurance lowering"

You are right; I dont know how Web Filtering works, I dont know if when a page gets loaded it could block only certain types of advertisements, perhaps this is just wishful thinking I dont know? But theres my dream..........having a program that will block only certain types of advertisments

Anyhow; I have disabled 'advertising' in my settings until better updates are applied to Norton Safety Minder.  I do appreciate your product though and will FOREVER look forward to using it :)

ooh pop ups lol I never noticed it til now. Since having Norton Safety and having "Advertisments" blocked....................well lets just say by not having it enabled it made a pop up of Netflix

*never noticed it til now*; oh well I will deal with it.

Well to me I want norton to block all ads. If I have something pop up or invade my screen I will make it a point not to buy that product!

Re: Please change the way "advertising" is being blocked

I guess I was thinking subcategories for Advertising.

If there was a way to visit a site that listed only 1 type of advertising to deal with; could you accept the product?  Again I was trying to view a news channel website and every link was being blocked because of advertising.  But when I visited the links it was mainly about "Buying  a Car, the all new Chevy Cruze"

KatieQ commented on my other thread (cant access allowed websites) about entering thumbnails or something into the allowed list and hopefully that might alleviate my problem.

I agree with you that whos to say there might be a popup about personal ads or something worse.

Also though, why cant a webpage load with advertisements being blocked.  All I want was the text format of a news article relating to my state. I'm with you, perhaps I could care less about the ads as well but I just dont think blocking the whole page is the solution lol if perhaps they might be able to block just the ads or give a person ability to block certain types of ads that would be fine with me

Re: Please change the way "advertising" is being blocked

Well if Norton ever gets support for firefox straightened out you can use firefox with adblock plus add on and it will block the ads so they don't display but the webpage loads. I use it and I am very satisfied with it.

Re: Please change the way "advertising" is being blocked

Its not compatible yet?  I have noticed that some sites that you try to visit on Internet Explorer still gets blocked by Norton on other Browsers (Firefox and MSN Explorer)

Re: Please change the way "advertising" is being blocked

lol yeah well I'm telling ya hehe

Today I visited this site:  http://www.nbc.com/contact/general/?__status=1

Notice the URL; so basically I was trying to contact NBC about saving a particular show that got cancelled.

I wrote all my information, wrote down a fairly good email; hit 'send' and Norton Safety Minder blocked the page because of "Advertising"

So of course I had to disable Safety Minder; re wrote the information, re wrote my email; all jumbled around (but probably shorter lol).

Hit send and this is what popped up:  ( www.larrytolman.com/after.jpg)  Sorry this site wouldnt let me attach a .jpg file

Now the link provided (above)  is ROUGHLY the same information on the page as the .jpg (from larryolman.com)

(Norton allowed me to visit the site to begin with but after submitting something and re loading the page; then it blocked it)

Oh well; just saying!!!
