PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR message using Word on W8.1

On W8.1 I have MS Office Starter 2010. I just installed Norton Security over NIS 2014. Every time I try to use Word or Excel I get the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR message. I decided to DISABLE, both the A/V and FW. Problem DOES NOT occur!

Help!!!

Hi larafl,
Please check if your Norton Security is version 22.1.0.9 [ns main gui > help > about]
Eventhough this is the latest version, this has a bug which causes the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR BSOD on windows 8.x systems which either has a virtual drive (office starter has one) or an encryption utility which uses virtual drive. May be its a problem with how the symantec drivers and the pnp drivers of windows interact. The good news is its being investigated actively and expect a patch with in a few weeks.

Please check your windows event viewer to find the logs related to this error, attach the dumps corresponding to each of it by changing its extension to .txt from .dmp or add all the dumps related in a .zip file (compressed file) and attach to your reply to the link specified below.

Re: PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR message using Word on W8.1

Thanks for the feedback Nikhil. I do have the 22.1.0.9 version, it was a s/w d/l from Symantec yesterday so that is why it probably is up to date. Yes, a virtual Q: drive is created by MS Office on my machine.

I had looked at that thread you referenced before posting as I was not sure it was identical. One of the reason's I didn't call was I saw the uninstall/reinstall and since I just did this I didn't want to connect to Symantec, have them do this and cause another BSOD so I posted here.

All the MS Office programs BSOD so I have a few Minidumps which I've zipped up and include as well as a screen capture from Blue Screen View showing the contents (partially) of one. 5 in total as I did some debug until I discovered it was NS 2015 that caused it.

Really 'nasty' problem too. Once the PC restarts my Network wireless card is 'gone', I have to disconnect it and plug it back in again and sometimes even need to power off and back on to get a connection. Also some program I open (like an e-mail checker) lose the settings as the settings file is open and gets trashed and I have to re-do it (I now keep a copy).

I don't see how this problem was missed if they did beta testing? You mention this, "The good news is its being investigated actively and expect a patch with in a few weeks.", where is this documented? I'll re-read the TrueCrypt thread again though in case I missed it.

EDIT: OK, found it, but not sure how to do this for MS Office?

So, you found Permalink     I thought this issue may be compatibility. Office Starter + W8 ~ Nikhil has command knowledge of this issue.

@larafl,
Its a little bad that one fix breaks another. A bug brought up during and after testing which affected the shutdown time for a lot of users was fixed in this latest one. My personal inference is that, that fix broke the virtual drives. But you have a work around, if you have a microsoft account (outlook / hotmail / msn / onedrive etc) you can edit your documents online (a bit difficult as its inside a browser, but the latest product version is obtained freely. Nothing to install to your machine [ I think its for word, powerpoint and excel only])

Re: PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR message using Word on W8.1

I am experiencing the same issue, except with a different third party utility. I recently upgraded my Norton subscription and changed from Norton 360 to Norton Security. Everything was fine with N360. My version number is 21.1.0.9. Ever since the upgrade, when ever I use TrueCrypt to mount a volume I immediately get the Win 8.1 BSOD PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR as soon as the mount occurs. It seams that other people are getting this with the Windows virtual drive and I am getting it with the TrueCrypt volume mount. Seams like the same problem so that is why I am posting to this thread. Once my PC restarts I need to use the recovery key for BitLocker. Then it states the computer cannot restart and I need to do a restore. Once that is complete I am back, but it happens again once I use TrueCrypt. Only started after I installed Norton Security. Any help is much appreciated, I have used Norton for years without issues.
