Poll: MS Patch Tuesday - does your IE get blocked?

not every time, but sometimes i've noticed that IE gets blocked by nis08 after I get the MS monthly update. it doesn't seem to happen with other applications, but IE 6.x and 7.x both seem to be affected. has anyone else ever encountered this problem and what did you do to resolve it?

thanks!

I'm runing XP Pro, and all my Internet apps still run normally after the update.

Same here.Is it being blocked or is it being detected? There are updates for IE on Patch Tuesday therefore it is normal that IE has been changed and normal that NIS firewall is popping up

Is your NIS firewall set up to automatically decide on which programs to block? Or is it set up for asking you so that you can make a decision? It's recommended that you let NIS decide on which programs to block. If this is how your firewall is set up, IE should not get blocked even if IE updates are released as part of MS updates. However, if your firewall is set up to ask you for making a decision, an updated version of IE will generate a prompt for you where you can choose to either allow or block IE. You might have inadvertently blocked IE from such an alert.

MS Patch Tuesday updates do not contain updates for IE every month... that's the reason you don't see this happen every month.

Re: Poll: MS Patch Tuesday - does your IE get blocked?

hey sunny - i haven't ever changed any default settings nor was I prompted for a rule. i i did change the setting for IE from customer to allow after i tried using IE (actually using IE engine within ff via a plug-in), which restored my browser connection, so is there a log or something that can help identify what occured with the fw after the update hit?

thanks for the heads up on IE - i'll keep an eye on the MS package details for IE updates and see if i can get you more information next time.

Hmmm, interesting. Let's see if your Security History contains any useful info. From the NIS UI, click the View History link on the left. This will open your Security History. Select Firewall - Traffic from the dropdown list at the top. Now review the items in the list and see what you can find for IE. You can also view the details for each of these items and can even view the actual program rule via one of the links.

Let me know if you could find anything interesting in there.
