Pop ups warning of virus threat

I was on a website and clicked on a photo (not to download anything ...etc.). A pop up appeared with a loud voice claiming that I must contact a "Microsoft" number to avoid a serious virus threat before I could proceed to any other web sites or pages. I disconnected from the internet quickly but the voice message continued even after I logged off from my laptop and the screen saver appeared asking me to log in with my password. I only managed to get the web pages and voice alert to disappear after shutting down the computer.

Turning it on again every thing seems normal and I did a full Norton System Scan which detected no problems.

Should I still be worried about some sort of MalWare having gotten onto my computer or not ?? Should I contact someone to look into any threts on the computer ??

Thanks, in advance, for any advice.

Re: Pop ups warning of virus threat

This is just another example of malware that is activated as an ad on a web site. If you click on the infected link or image, this kind of message pops up. The scammers are trying to get you to pay for a phony fix to your system that might actually infect your system for real, and could steal personal information.

Installing an ad blocker add on for your browser should help stop this kind of malware.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Pop ups warning of virus threat

For peace of mind, you might want to stop over at one of the free malware removal sites that we recommend. You can tell them what happened and you just want to make sure that there isn't any malware. You can tell them what you have done. They can help you to check it out thoroughly and help you clean it up if infected.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users who unfortunately has passed away. That site is still being run by a good expert who happens to be one of the other Gurus.  The new site is listed first in this link.
