Popup Free product

My Norton Security with Backup is coming up for renewal in 40 days.  I really need to find a less annoying option.  The ads and popups have gotten under my skin to the point that I need to change products.  I'd really prefer to stay in the Norton family of products.  Is there a Norton product that will run quietly in the background, and only notify you if there is a problem.

I just tried to watch a DVD and Norton gave me 6 popups during that 90 minutes.  Each time I had to get up walk across the room and x the the popup out.

And everytime I go to browse, Norton stops me with a popup that it wants to install a toolbar.  I really don't want Norton to be my search provider!  I use a search engine that gets me the results I'm looking for!

Does a silent Norton product exist?

Re: Popup Free product

Hi, Vicky. You can go into Settings >Administrative Settings and disable all notifications.

It will at the very least, minimise Symantec's marketing junk messages !

While you're at it, go through ALL the Settings to set Norton up how YOU want it.

Re: Popup Free product

I had read Peterweb's post before I posted.  His post suggested that there is a product that has some settings, but its not in Norton Security and Backup.  There is nothing in my administrative settings  called " Special Offer Notification"   The only setting that I could find is Silent Mode which can only be set for a 24 hour period.

I'm really tired of the annoyance and will not renew Security and Backup.  I have always trusted Norton with my protection. But will not continue to buy a product that disrupts my workflow at least once every 30 minutes!  But that said, if there is a different product that enables control over all these incessant popups and notifications Norton would continue to have my business.

Re: Popup Free product

Vicky, the special offer setting is indeed in administrative settings. You need to scroll down through the main UI window to find it.

Also, the next pop-up that appears look closely and see if there is a way to click "Do not show this again" in the pop-up box. If so that usually clears seeing most marketing pop-up in a general way.

Re: Popup Free product

Also when you are asked to install browser extensions in the pop up after a Norton product update, I find that clicking into the pop up will bring up a browser page with all Norton extensions listed. I just close that page and the pop ups do not return for that browser.

To ensure Norton does not interfere with your DVD playing, right click on the Norton icon in your system tray and turn on Silent Mode. That should suppress all notifications/pop ups. Check the image in SoulAsylum's post above and you well see the Silent Mode settings. Be sure it is turned on, and set for Full Screen Detection.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Popup Free product

There is nothing ANYWHERE inside Security and Backup that resembles this screen.

My account is a user account.

Do you have to run as administrator to get control?  If so can the admin set this for all users?

Re: Popup Free product

Yes. You have to be logged into a Windows admin account to access Norton's Settings.

EDIT

Run as Administrator will not work.

Re: Popup Free product

I just saw this screen on my Norton Security Premium, but then I'm always signed into it on my PC.

Re: Popup Free product

Okay logged into the administrator account, found the setting, turned it off.  Today logged in to my account and was on the computer and got two Norton Popups in an hour.

So apparently for this to work you must run as administrator, which kind of ups the risk factors.

Re: Popup Free product

Vicky did you reboot the computer so the settings changes could become global while logged into the admin account? If not please do and let us know is the pop-ups still persist.

Cheers

Re: Popup Free product

Wow.

I've NEVER been offered a "Special Offer."

And I just checked... and it's turned on.  So apparently it's always been turned on.  We are talking years..

If there are good values or deals, I would like to know about them.

Why have I gotten no offers?

What could be stopping any offers?

Re: Popup Free product

Vicky

Maybe we are talking about different pop ups. Are these for offers of new features, or just notifications of tasks Norton is performing?

Can you post a screenshot of the pop up?
