Pre-Release Norton Identity Safe extension for Firefox browser

"Please note – this extension only provides partial support for Vault Logins. This extension will fill and capture Logins, but does not support viewing or editing Logins. We are evaluating future plans for Login support as well as additional Vault items like Addresses, Wallet, Notes, and Favorites."

This makes the extension far less than a solution.  Not being able to view Logins suggests you cannot browse your Vault contents from within FF and not being able to edit Logins means if you need to change a password you have to do it outside of FF.  Am I interpreting this correctly?

And what deadline do we now have to wait for to gain these capabilities back?  And what about the ever-elusive query on the fate of having a local vault for those of us less than enamored of having all our passwords stored off the computer that sits in our own home?

Re: Pre-Release Norton Identity Safe extension for Firefox browser

I installed the pre-release version 1.0.220 in FF 48.0.2 yesterday.  It worked OK for the most part but today it is not working at all.  Is there some way to activate it or is it supposed to activate automatically every time FF is opened?

Re: Pre-Release Norton Identity Safe extension for Firefox browser

It appears that the vault has to be unlocked with a password every time FF is opened.  Previously, it was possible to configure the vault to remain open until the computer was rebooted.  The current arrangement is problematic because (1) I normally open and close FF a number of times during the day and (2) the vault unlocking process, at least at present, is very slow--on the order of a minute.

I have other, stand-alone programs, especially those using a cloud, that do not use a browser but require a login.  It seems that Identity Safe does not work for these programs.  Is it true that it is restricted to programs opened from a browser?

Hello

To me, a non-FF=IS user, it seems to be more secure to have to open the vault up every time you close and reopen FF.

Thanks.

Re: Pre-Release Norton Identity Safe extension for Firefox browser

I may be unusual but I sometimes may use 3 browsers during a session at the computer:  FF for most of my browsing activity, Chrome should I want to invoke Chromecast (or for now need Identity Safe to fill in something I forgot) and Edge for a small number of apps that I probably could use private windows for but seems safer to me this way.  In any case, opening the vault once per boot is my preferred way of operating--open it once and it becomes immediately available for use (hopefully eventually even for Edge).

Re: Pre-Release Norton Identity Safe extension for Firefox browser

Floplot,

On the other hand, I regularly use several programs that ask me, for security reasons, to close the browser after closing the program.  (I teach online, so there are lectures, assignments, student records, etc., involved.)  After thinking about this a bit, I realize that on some days I would be closing and reopening FF as much as dozen times.  Although the Identity Safe login process is working faster now (~10 seconds), it adds up to a major nuisance.

I can imagine that because the vault is unlocked from within the FF extension, there is no obvious way to keep it unlocked when FF (and the extension) closes, but not when the computer reboots.  However, I also access the vault from NIS, which requires a separate unlock.  (I use this for the occasional need for IE and also for editing logins.)  Wouldn't it be possible for the FF extension to check for the presence of an open a IS program with an unlocked vault?  Then it could unlock its own access to the vault and not have to require the user to do that.  In that way there would be only one unlock per reboot.

Just a thought.

Anything is possible with the right coding. Whether it fits into the security concerns Norton is trying to address is only known to Norton.

And this is a pre release version, and there are supposed to be further enhancements with future versions. Maybe it will include more settings for controlling the log ins to the vault.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
