Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Today I installed an upgrade for Internet Security for Chrome on a Windows 10 machine.  Apart from the toolbar disappearing completely, I now have to click on an icon at the top rhs of my screen to find out what is going on.

However, even then, when I go to login to one of my websites, I am first prompted to select which user id I want to use even if there's only one login id set up in Identity Safe.  Then, if that's not enough, I then have to select it again just to get the password.

This has got to be a joke hasn't it?   I know I can have multiple logins for each website but, once the id is selected, the login password is fixed because I can't have more than one password for that id on that website.  So why on earth isn't the password being entered automatically?

I chatted with an agent who told me this was how it was supposed to be - which makes no sense to me whatsoever.  So please would someone explain the logic?  Thanks.

This is an addendum - it's now even worse.  When I have multiple logins for the same site, when I get to the screen where I have to click again to get the password, the options pop up once but, before I can select the correct id, the dropdown screen disappears and will not display again so I have to input the password manually.  Now that has got to be a bug.  Driving me nuts and I rue the day that I applied this upgrade.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Same thing here - but It feels more like a downgrade, not an upgrade: I'll call it an (unwanted) update...

The update for Identity Safe Chrome extension is ridiculous, it adds many steps to the login procedure, completely ignores the main settings and, to make things more frustrating, closes the vault with the browser... Basically, every time you login to open the vault, then close the browser and reopen it, you need to sign in again - with many clicks, typing your long/safe password, then a few more clicks (that becomes many more clicks if you have more than one password) - Having spent almost a whole day with support, I ended up being told the change was made for security reasons!

What about practicality and/or functionality reasons?

Why it is being forced and not introduced as an option in the settings is beyond comprehension - If one is able to restore an infected file, one should be able to keep this vault open and only sign in once for the whole duration of the Windows session, the way it has always worked, until the latest update, that is.

It may be more secure for companies or internet cafes but it is simply impractical, bothersome and irritating on a private PC.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Oh I so agree! I downgraded 2 nights ago from Premium to Deluxe as I did not need all the extras and wanted to reduce my annual renewal cost. The 'new' identity safe option went into effect on Chrome. Now, along with having to log into my vault every single time I open my browser, the autofill option has stopped working for most of the financial sites I use on a regular basis. Went into a chat window with support, was told that the banking sites "don't allow autofill", which is bollocks, I've been using IS for years with multiple log ins for different accounts with no issues. There were 2 bank sites which DID autofill, so his argument made no sense.
I'm ready to scrap Norton altogether and go back to AVG free and letting Chrome save my info!
SO SO SO Frustrated. Was told 'my problems would be escalated and Norton would get back to me in a couple of days', and that 'senior support engineers area trying to fix it'.
Not losing any sleep over them 'getting back to me', but have lost huge amount of respect and confidence for this company whose product I have been using without problem for nearly 10 years.

I am having the same problems and it's not just banking sites it's most of the sites I'm on. The banking sites accept the autofill from chrome just fine but the norton identity safe is a no go. Plus having to sign in so many times got me so annoyed I went back to using Chrome's own username password utility at least it works!

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

had the same issues,   but found a solution on another thread.  this was not my idea,  but I am copying/pasting this solution.

  1. Under Chrome settings, open the Advanced section and go to the System group of settings.
  2. Under the System group, there is an option to "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed".  Enable this option.

Now, when you close Chrome, you will see a Chrome icon in the system tray.  The      Identity Safe vault is still running and is open in the background.  When you open the Chrome browser again, the Identity Safe vault will remain open and functional.

This also seems to have taking care of the auto fill issue.

Brilliant idea but Unfortunately keeps Google tracking everything even after closing the browser... and you still lose the familiar yellow auto-fill and add a couple more clicks to logins.

Exactly and that's why none of my auto clean ups worked and I found  chrome running in the background after closure .  It's amazing really that Norton released this awful update with absolutely no warning or any instruction to avoid  the headaches it caused yesterday for me .  I only discovered the icon in my tray by accident .

But having to sign into vault every time I close my browser was the final straw  for me and after 14 years  I uninstalled Norton and won't be back unless they  revert   ID Safe back to how it was ,  staying signed in until you reboot .   Stupidest update they ever did .

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

FYI. I disabled the new extension and enabled the old in chrome extensions. Now when I open my browser I open the Norton deluxe program, go to settings>identity safe>configure. This will give me the old sign in. Not the best but stays on and all are auto filling again. Hopefully they will fix the new but they seem to like making us sign in every time we close our browser. Good Luck!

Really Norton? I don't even have Chrome installed and can't log into Identity Safe because I get a pop up to install a freaking Chrome Extension!?!

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

I agree with this ridiculous change; Norton has slipped way down on my list of indispensable must haves on line.  I run Chrome in incognito mode; shut down the browser when not in use, and have no intention of signing into Norton every time I need to log into a secure website. Norton Identity Safe has now become a boat anchor and I will be cutting the line.  I have some time left on the virus subscription which I will start reevaluating.  When companies don't think through their strategies and the effect on the public (see Apple batteries); it begs the questions as to how much they care about the customers.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

How to destroy a product send out an update that renders it nearly useless.

On the 9th of March tried to open Norton Identity Safe from the Norton Control Panel splash screen saying Chrome needs the Identity safe extension updating. Click button says update successful try to open from control panel again same screen, click update again successful. Back to control panel up pops same screen !.

I also use IE as Chrome is buggy on some sites but can no longer use Identity safe in IE as yep you guessed it up pops that update screen again.

Identity Safe in Chrome opens though? does it fill in users name and passwords NO of cause it doesn't !

on my machine I have loads of backup sets configured Files and folders backing up to different drives so very important to me and work. Would take hours of work to set up again.

so contact Norton Support on line made the fatal mistake of letting them take control of my machine.

Told him not to do anything that would delete backup set configuration.

That's OK he said they will still be there. I am trying to keep this as short as possible but I am fuming.

So Mr Support runs app that completely removes Norton Internet Security Premium from my machine.

Then re-installs guess what yep all my Backup set configurations have gone.

he opens Identity Safe In Chrome says fixed just reboot your machine.

So reboot machine and same issues and NO backup sets configured !

I have emailed Norton in Reading with the problems I now have a week later No! reply.

Hey Norton any chance of a fix to the update that doesn't work and rendered Identity Safe almost useless

Have been a customer and used Norton for over 20 years first time that I will really consider if renewing my subscriptions are worth it.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Ditto for all of the above. I'm holding back on typing anymore while this aggravated. I'm not a skinflint but there really should be some sort of rebate for all the time and aggravation caused by this screw up. We PAY good money for this, why should we not
be comped or something, same as a restaurant would do after serving poorly prepared food etc.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Norton, you lost me as a customer because of this.  For years I have renewed Norton Security MAINLY because I loved (past tense) Identity Safe.  I religiously kept me LOCAL VAULT, but with the new FORCE to move to the cloud vault, and then this new DOWNGRADE of interface, I am OUT!  I will switch to one of the MANY GOOD password managers (some free) and switch to a new Internet Security software in the future just because of how you have screwed this up soooooo bad.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

I disabled add-ons in Internet Explore 11, and removed extensions in Chrome . I open vault in main Norton security manager to reference user and passwords. I go to site and log in manually.

It is helping for my memory of passwords. No way i am going to save them in a cloud. in Chrome, or Internet Explore. You know just have to do it the old way write them down on paper. lucky me I have save ever one I ever used.

I do get the pop saying if I want to really be safe I should install extensions again, and mess it all up again Sad:(

Like everyone else I am looking for a solution other then Norton, Not many out there :(

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Well the question is Who's done what ?

I have had the Identity Safe issue since 9th March have put my comments on the complete and utter sorry story of the downgrade Sorry Upgrade that Norton thought would make my experience so fantastic using Identity Safe. Its been something beginning with the letter F but fantastic is not my first choice of words as since the 9th March haven't been able to use it along with many others it seems and being told to remove Chrome to get it to work was the icing on the cake must admit that the meetings I have attended over this that one did cause a lot of laughter so thanks for that one Norton.

Back to "Well the question is Who's done what ?"

This Morning 25th March after a live update three updates installing. I tried Identity Safe and it opened from the Norton Control Panel tried from IE that opened as well so now for a login to a secure website nope no auto fill blank text fields.

But hey I can access my vault a start a least so my Norton Friends have you sent a sort of a fix out or have I just been lucky ?

If you have great if not how lucky am I :) but for how long is the million dollar question.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Update:

I now have setup to use Internet Explore 11 to use Norton toolbar and Identity safe, and made internet Explore default browser again.

Only use Chrome with no extensions, toolbar, Identity safe, secure search or home page. Google is default search.

When I switch back to Internet Explore default browser, Chrome switch all Desk top Icons shortcuts to go to Google search made a real mess. Had to re establish Icon shortcuts in Internet Explore.

This little fight between Chrome, Norton, Windows 10 is in my opinion not gaining either one customers, only making people use two different browsers to do what could be done on One more safely. Maybe the old model of surfing TV channels is in Order:)

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

OK, I'm late to the game on this one.  Has the Chrome extension changed to the "web" interface and not the old toolbar add-on?  I pay for my Identity Safe as part of my Norton Security.  I know the "free" Identity Safe is all "web" but thought that the part of the purchased product wasn't changing.  Not a fan of the "web".  I do see that my IE browser still has the toolbar add-on.  Why not Chrome?

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

OK, it's now a month since my original comment that started this thread and now it's even worse!

Today, I tried to access my ids in identity safe and kept getting the message Upgrade your Identity Safe Extension no matter how many times I did exactly that.  Now all access to my information is blocked.

Oh yes, and btw, trying to login to yahoo mails is STILL like playing whacamole.

Come on Norton - I've used your products for over 20 years and, for the first time ever, I am thinking of going elsewhere.

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Update:

I am happy to announce I can remember all of my passwords again, from my recall in brain. It is now the default Identity  safe, as  I type all in by keyboard. I found the Norton tool bar really messed things up. I Do not use IE 11 to slow, Do not use clouds to unsafe, Maybe Norton could develop a safe for sure Browser of its own?

Re: Problem with Identity Safe following Chrome toolbar upgrade

Further to my original post from a month ago  - as I expected no one from Norton 'got back to me' regarding the issues with Identity Safe and the new extension.

I resorted to hand writing all my logins down from my vault,(because THAT'S secure!) and am now allowing Chrome to save them instead. I've stopped logging in to IS in any way as it will not work or autofill any of my sites with one or two exceptions.
I am next going to cancel my subscription with Norton after over 10 years of using them successfully - this screwed up update was really just too much.
Totally disgusted and angry with how they handled this issue.

If you can get along with out the extensions wait the virus protection side is still OK.
