problems with my norton antivirus 2010

I got norton antivirus 2010, and every since I installed it, my computer keeps shutting down on its own. It does it at all times, when I am on the internet, or when I just turn it back on from it shutting it down. I was wondering how I can solve this problem.

Hi! Crimsoncolts18,

Please provide Operating System & Service Pack version installed (if any).  Also provide system age & manufacturer information.  It is possible that this is a coincidence.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Hi! Crimsoncolt18,

Do you Vista Service Pack 1 or 2?  Is your system a Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, or something else?

You can find your installed service pack information by clicking Start>Right click Computer>Left Click on Properties.  This will provide information about your system's installed processor, memory, and Operating System information.

it is windows vista service pack 1, and the computer is an emachine model t3626

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

If at all possible run Windows Update from the control panel to download and install any available updates; except for device drivers you will want to go to the device maker's site to download any new drivers.  (Device drivers are what allows Windows to see & communicate with a device such as a printer.)

Also can you enter your system setup screen (see the user manual for instructions on to do this);  if you can see if any of the available options tell the system tempurature take note of any tempuratures and let me know what they are.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Sorry it took so long for a reply, the computer kept shutting down over and over before I could get the updates done so I ended up going to bed before I threw the computer out the window. I woke up and installed windows vista service pack 2, and went to canon and downloaded the new device driver for the printer/scanner thing. I am not sure where my user manual for the computer is, so I am not sure how to get to the tempature and stuff. I was wondering if you knew if this would help me with my computer since I installed service pack 2 and got the new device driver from canon, like, could that of been the problem with the computer? Or do I need to figure out how to go get them tempatures you were telling me about?

Hi Crimson

What fire wall are you using in conjuction with NAV2010? NAV 2010 doesn't have any fire wall in the program, so you need to run a good firewall also which will not interfere with NAV. Have you cleaned out the insides of your computer lately? Dust balls and animal hairs and cigarette smoke tends to get inside of the computer and can clog up the fans and outlets of your computer. Things like this can cause a computer to get too hot and then shut down to protect the motherboard and other components of the computer. It's a good idea to clean out the insides of the computer like on a monthly basis by blowing out the dust etc from the insides of the computer and also checking to see that everything is connected tightly.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Hi crimson

Let's check to see if possibly some malware may be causing this problem. It may also be a hardware problem too. If you can, would you please start by running a HiJackThis scan for us. Please pick the executable which is on the right side of the page.

Please download HiJackThis from http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Choose the executable and save it on your desktop. Run the file and select the first option on the main menu "Do a system scan and save a log file". When this is finished, Notepad will open with the log file in it. Save the log file and attach it to a post here via the Add Attachments under the orange Post button Please don't attempt to fix anything that it shows until someone checks out the log. Thanks.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Please remove the computer case cover and see if the system stays running.  If you can get into Windows please download and install Speedfan from here.  Click on the blue words SpeedFan 4.40 you do not have to change anything on your system to complete the installation of SpeedFan just install it as you would any other program.  Let us know the temperatures of your system with the case cover on and off of the system.  This will not interfere with any attempts being made to determine whether or not your system is infected with malware; it will however help us to determine if you have a hardware problem such as a failing Power Supply Unit.  But this cannot be determined without knowing the system temps.  I will have the local PC Specialist look at this thread to see what his advise is.

Please be patient in this process as you are dealing with a complex machine and with all machines sometimes things will go wrong leading to the need for time and calmness to get things fixed.

Tip, Do not open the side of the case if it is under warranty.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Hi! Quads,

Your tip is very good general adivice.  However the system is two years of age and the unit only carries a one year warranty.  I was uable to locate any information on an extended warranty; maybe you can.  Most system manufacturers do allow the end user to open the computer's case for maintenance and upgrade purposes, but do not allow the user to have a technician do the work when the system is under warranty without voiding it.

To others:

I had the forementioned PC Specialist look at this thread and was told that if the power supply fan is clogged up the system will not operate correctly.  Furthermore if the power supply unit's (PSU for short) cooling fan is clogged for an extended period of time then the PSU must be replaced with a new one.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Nope, I will go by rules over here

1.  HD manufactures give a 3 year warranty  So go by the longest warranted part, If there is a part older go by that

2.  A lot cases have a little seal, Open case by someone not qualified especially without anti-static gear etc.  Warranty's are null and void

3.  If a User tries to  say install and new video card and something goes wrong, with other already installed parts by any means even say a static zap.  The installed components no longer are covered, and the new component if damaged can also have no warranty.

I have come across instances where a manufacturer says "improper handling of our product" no longer covered.

ive downloaded like 20 things, how about we stop going under the idea that this is all coincidence, and start acting as if i downloaded norton antivirus and it messed up my computer. Now if i take it off my computer will the problem go away?

The problem is that Norton AV is not designed or known to create the problem you experience. That is why advice is being given to you.

I dont think anyone can say for certain that removing Norton will resolve your problem. From experience I suggest that it will not and if it does then we will never know the reason why. How you remove Norton when you have a system that is valid for 2 secs is another matter. Nevertheless it is technically possible but not advisable.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

It's some sort of coincidence otherwise other people who have installed Norton would appear stating the same problem, Including Myself other Forum members, My Neigbour and other PC's I have installed Norton on.

The symptoms you describe sound very much like hardware problems, not software.

Can you start the computer in Safe Mode without it turning itself off? You do this by tapping the F8 key while you start it, before the Microsoft logo screen appears.

Hi! Quads,

Thanks for providing the information quoted above.  All the manufacturers I have dealt with do not have these guidelines on systems as old as three years up to the most recent units.  I will definitely try to keep your information in mind.

Hi! Crimsoncolts18,

I recommended the download because you are experiencing a thermal shut down which has nothing to do with any Norton products.  You could have installed some other security program and had the same thing happen.  We need to determine if the shut down is being done by the power supply, processor, or the motherboard itself.  I know this is very tedious, but it is necessary.

Re: problems with my norton antivirus 2010

Hi

Malware could also be causing the computer to shut down or perhaps even a rootkit. You mentioned you downloaded like 20 things. What kind of programs have you downloaded besides your Norton product and where did you download them from?

It don't matter now, I took the computer to best buys geek squad to have them look at it, and they said the motherboard is fried on it. So no point in suggesting now, thanks for the suggestions though.

Hi crimsoncolts

Sorry to hear about your fried motherboard. Could you please mark your thread as solved even though it wasn't a very good outcome.? This way others will know that the thread is closed and could see that they might have the same problem. Thanks

Hmmm, Careful that sometimes it is cheaper or more sense in terms of future proofing to buy an upgrade kit (combo) Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Video.
If old component not under warranty.
Than Buying a new motherboard for an older system and labour on top,
2 Systems heard about like 3 weeks ago, like $700 + NZD to get the Motherboard replaced,  Costs like $550 -$650 for an upgrade kit.
