Public Symsilent files

Just a quick question. I have a Symantec map, with Symsilent files. Its located in Users/public map. What are they and can you delete them?

Re: Public Symsilent files

Try downloading and running the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from    www.norton.com/nrnr  Be sure to use the Advanced Options > Remove Only, then restart your computer and install Norton 360 from your Norton Account again. That might help clean things up a bit.

I have no files like that on my system. Are you using a Norton product, or a Symantec product? These forums are for Norton. If you have Symantec you need to post your question here.   https://community.broadcom.com/home

Re: Public Symsilent files

I asumed Symantec was the company behind Norton...

I had a free basic norton scanner on default on this pc. later i logged in with norton 360.

I asumed those files were a remnant of the free norton.

Re: Public Symsilent files

Norton uses to be part of Symantec, but was split off as a separate business when Broadcom purchased Symantec  a few years ago.

Those files could be a remnant from a very old version of Norton that used to have a threat mapping feature. I would suggest you start by trying to rename the files, ie add ".old" to them and restart your computer, and then test to see if things are still working correctly. Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not Shutdown and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.

Leave it that way for a few days, and if no issues are found, go ahead and delete them.

Re: Public Symsilent files

Ok thx, i try.

Recently i did a system recovery. So those files could be from a Norton version of 4 or 5 years old.

Then i logged in with my 360 account and installed that. But its like files are scattered on my PC for some reason. old and new. Causing some small issues i think.
