Re: Question what is dumprep.exe

The Dumprep.exe tool is a Windows XP fault logging program. If a serious error occurs, Dumprep.exe writes the error details to a text file. The Dumprep.exe tool then prompts you to send the error information to Microsoft. The Dumprep.exe tool is a non-essential system process that is installed for third-party use.  You can see the info in the following Microsoft document.

Re: Question what is dumprep.exe

It is a dump reporting tool from Microsoft, a legitimate program. It is not dangerous and you do not have to worry about it. You can go to Task manager and end the program dumprep.exe when it is running, which then will not slow your computer.

You can even turn off this by following the steps:

Click Start

Click Control panel.

In the Control panel window, click System

On the Adavanced tab, click Error Reporting.

Select Disable Error Reporting. But I do not think its really needed or recommended.

Re: Question what is dumprep.exe

If you have a system freeze, it often seems to be dumprep hogging the system resources.  I have come to the point that I end the process in task manager.  I find in XP that it is almost impossible to close some things, even in TM until dumprep finishes doing whatever it is doing.
