RansomWare delivered through Norton
I purchased an new laptop recently. I have Norton Security Premium and have used Norton for 15 years without a problem. On Oct 27 I set up my new laptop and downloaded Norton. When I attempted to run my first backup, it would run for a couple of seconds then stop. I signed in to Norton support and started a chat session. and delt with [removed]. During the course of the chat, support determined that I had some old files and that Norton would have to be downloaded again and installed. They started the download. Sometime during this download, I was asked a couple of questions and then the PC was restarted. When I attempted to sign in, it would not allow me. I contacted support again and they walked me through some things to try then I was told to take the PC back to where it was purchased and return it. They said some really bad had happened and the Op system was locked up. When I pushed on this, I was told this was none of their concern and they could no longer help me. Shortly thereafter, I was contacted by Tech Geeks and they said they could repair my PC for $199.99. I told them where to go and again contacted Norton support. They walked through some things and then gave me a contact number for ASUS. ASUS walked me through how to reestablish Normal Mode. It returned me to where I was when I first started the PC and I had to do it all over again. I lost all my files. Luckily, I had back up.
Long story but I felt I should share it. The crooks got to my system while I was on with Norton support chat. I did not sign into anything odd or click on any links. Norton was compromised pure and simple. I am now shopping for another Security Program as I can no longer trust Norton. Sad when the software that should be protecting you is the source of the Ransomware.
BEWARE.

Re: RansomWare delivered through Norton
First of all there was no "ransomware" delivered by Norton. Ransomware holds your pc hostage till you front money to unlock it. Secondly your purchased a new pc you said. Well new pc's come with preinstalled security. Some have Norton and others have McAfee or Trend Micro. Did you remove these pre installed antivirus programs first? Where were you making this backup to? An external drive? The cloud? Locally? So your new pc was locked up? Correct. Did you try safe mode? Did you use the official Norton chat? You said you "setup" your new pc and downloaded Norton. What were you using for security before this?

Debra
That really doesn't sound like the genuine Norton Support -- are you sure you did not end up with one of the scams?
That is a strange coincidence .... and it sounds just like the typical scammers end point. Again I wonder if that was the Best Buy Tech Geeks or not.
Anyway watch out for a message here or a Private Message (watch the Inbox envelope symbol up top right) from one of the Norton Staffers -- names in Red.

Hello PatsSoxBruins
I have noticed that you give a long link to get to Customer Support. There is a nice short Url which we use including Symantec Staff. It's so easy that even I can memorize it.
www.norton.com/chat That is the official Norton support.
Thanks.

I would also like to know about this "Tech Geek". It is not part of Norton. If you Google Tech Geek you get this:
