Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

Katie,

When you post a message about a new version being available, could you please post the version number?

Because quite frankly the situation with updates is getting very annoying and irritating. It's hit or miss, Russian roulette, cross your fingers, whatever you want to call it. The updates are just not getting installed in a consistent manner. Sometimes you run Liveupdate and get it, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you log in and download via the download manager link and get the latest version, sometimes you don't.

I have a lab here with 10 computers. They are all started with a clean install of Win 7 and have the same software installed on them. Some are running NOF 56, some 61, some 71, and this one 73, which I presume is the April 2 release.

Yes, Katie (in response to a post you left me in another thread) I know how to tell what the version number is, and I know how to update the software. I've been doing this for awhile.

But the updates are just not getting installed in a consistent manner. If I'm going to update 3 computer labs, I need a WORKING DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINK for the new version, that's going to work the FIRST TIME, EVERY TIME. Something I can put on a flash drive or network share. I'm not going to waste my time with anything else, Believe it or not, I've got other things to do besides update Norton Online Family.

So can you give me a working direct download link for the latest version?

Thanks

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

Hi dbdan22,

Thanks for the valuable feedback.  The latest Norton Family for Mac Client is 3.1.3.73 and Windows Client is 2.6.0.73.

Please follow the instructions below to download the latest Norton Family on the devices.

  • Start your browser.
  • Connect to the Norton Family site (https://onlinefamily.norton.com)
  • Click on ‘Sign in’ button.
  • Enter your Norton Family account Email address and Password
  • Click ‘Sign In’
  • In the bottom left corner of the website (near the footer) Click on ‘Download Norton Family’
  • In the next page loaded, Click on ‘Download’ button.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions and install the Norton Family client.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

I've done that, Katie. And I'm telling you, I do not always get the latest version.

Is the Download Manager keeping something in cache that's preventing it from getting the latest version? Something is going on here.

And besides, I asked for a direct download link. Not via the download manager.

If I use the download manager, I want to take whatever it downloads and put it on a flash drive for use on the other computers in the lab. Where does the download manager put its files?

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

dbdan22,

There are a few possibilities that you haven't got the latest version.   We tried not to require users to restart the machine when an update is available, but for some updates, a reboot is unavoidable, so that could be a reason for not getting the latest version automatically.

Another possibility is that we just released an update yesterday, and the update has not been sent to your PC(s) yet.

I'll send the issue to the team for further investigation.

Sure you can download the update application to a flash drive by first using the steps I mentioned in my previous post, then selecting No to the question "Do your children use this device", and following the instructions to Save the NF-Installer.exe to the device you prefer.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

And also please explain this to me:

I have 2 PC's in the lab. One is running 61. I do a manual liveupdate, and reboot. It's still running 61. I run Liveupdate again and reboot. It's still running 61.

Another PC on which I've done nothing at all except look at it... voila, it has 73, all by itself.

Like I said, I have 3 computer labs to update. Almost 30 PC's in all. I am not a noob, I value my sanity, and I really don't care for this hit or miss Russian roulette updating scheme you have here. Symantec has had Liveupdate since forever. It's supposed to work all the time. Please fix it. Thank you.

You write: "Sure you can download the update application to a flash drive by first using the steps I mentioned in my previous post, then selecting No to the question "Do your children use this device", and following the instructions to Save the NF-Installer.exe to the device you prefer."

No, you don't want to save NF-Installer.exe on a flash drive. There's no point in doing that, because NF-Installer isn't working all the time either. You want to save what NF-Installer.exe downloads (provided that it got 73 and not something earlier). Then you take that and run it on the rest of the PC's.

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

dbdan22,

You probably have an older version of NF installer on the PC.  Please delete the file from the location indicated below and reinstall Norton Family again to see if it helps.

For Windows 7 : C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Norton\{NF22-B22-4abb-B07C-C084B04B4F12}

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

OK, I'll try that.

But you didn't address why Liveupdate sometimes pulls in the latest version and sometimes does not.

If I have 2 almost identical PC's in the lab, why is one PC running .73 all by itself without my having to do anything, while the other one is stuck at .61 despite 2 manual liveupdates and reboots?

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

dbdan22,

That could be caused by the older version(s) of Norton Family installers.  As I mentioned earlier, I'll report this to the team for further investigation.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Re: April 2 Update from Norton Family Team

I see version 73 coming in on more PC's now by itself, but i still see some stubborn PC's that are stuck on .61, .71 or earlier.

Don't forget that you still need to address why a manual Liveupdate (run from the Liveupdate link in Internet Security or 360) does not always pull in the latest version of NOF.
