Rebuild Backup Sets - no way to transfer them?

I use the backup in Norton Life Lock to backup to a NAS and a local USB.  Two backup sets.

I had to re-install Windows to a clean partition and then re-install Norton.  I have to rebuild my backup sets from scratch.  I now have a several Gb orphan backup on the NAS drive and wish to have Backup re-use it.  If I don't I'm going to have to WIPE the drive and start over as it has some odd protections on the files and manually erasing doesn't work.  Other backups/home systems are using that NAS drive too so you can see this isn't my first choice.

So my ask is for a feature to load the Backup Set Definition as an option under Restore Backup Set.

Side notes:

1. NortonLifeLock is not a good name for the overall product as I associate it with ONLY the acquired LifeLock server.  Not Backup, not AV, not VPN...  So it is confusing to see all of those products and then really stop and focus on what today's version is called.  I've been a customer of both Norton and Symatic since the 1980's (as in Norton's first DOS products and his editor) and there is this blind trust thing going.... so when you change names all the time... it throws an old fart like me off.

2. Backup isn't listed separately, you really have to dig to find the keyword.  How many people give up and use someone else's product when they can't even search for help?

Hello TXAggieSE. Look on your NAS drive and find the file named ARestore.exe, that file should allow you to perform your actions. Have a look at this older thread by a Symantec employee on the subject.

Re: Rebuild Backup Sets - no way to transfer them?

Much appreciated, and a useful little tool.

My problem isn't restoring, it's re-using the backup set definition.  I was hoping that since this and the console would allow a restore from a specified path, it could also restore the backup set definition.

It was hard to put this into words which is why I couldn't find any existing knowledge articles :(

Hummm...maybe I am dense these days lol. When you say "definition" are you suggesting reusing the same backup name? Just trying to clear the cobwebs on my end.

Re: Rebuild Backup Sets - no way to transfer them?

Ha, no worries!

The name is a nice to have, but rather:

Backup:

  • Drive D:\
  • Drive E:\
  • Exclude d:\temp
  • Exclude e:\onedrive
  • F:\AGSI\Acct\2020\

etc, etc.

As I run four drives, 2 from a .5Tb MSATA SSD and 2 from a RAID 1 array, plus NAS and USB external storage.

"Why yes, I'm an edge case!"

Unless one of the other Guru's can come up with something as a suggestion, I can only suggest restoring the old backup sets to a renamed directory on a target storage device. Delete the old sets and create new ones. Lets hear from the community.
