Re: A Recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked..

Hi,

I cannot see your picture yet, but it is possible that the detection is communication between your computer and a modem/router and not an actual attack. Getting this issue in the 2008 version was not all that uncommon.

If you have a current subscription you can install Norton Antivirus 2011 for free. But before trying to upgrade your Norton, run these two tools for the tidserv family of rootkits since they can cause similar symptoms.

Symantecs FixTDSS

Then upgrade your Norton using http://updatecenter.norton.com/

Re: A Recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked..

That is an exploit that is being blocked so it is not necessarily an actual attack (Norton will detect the buffer overflow and block it regardless). Make sure that you have all updates installed for your Windows XP by using www.windowsupdate.com and then update your Norton. Norton 2008 is an outdated product and you should really use the current one (it is free if you have a subscription).

Here you have info about MS Windows Server Service RPC Handling CVE-2008-4250.

Hello skshreyas01

You mentioned that you had AVG at first installed on your computer. How was this program removed before you installed NIS 2008? It needs to be thoroughly removed using their removal tool before you can get a good install of Norton security programs. I would recommend a visit to one of the free malware removal sites and ask them if you are infected. They will have the proper tools to tell you to use and will be able to tell if your computer is clean or not.

If it is clean and you have properly removed AVG, then an update to NIS 2011. An over the top install of NIS 2011 on a system that is running an older version of NIS like you are isn't recommended.

Please first pay a visit to one of the removal sites, and tell us how you removed AVG. and if your computer is clean, then we can give you the link for the current version of NIS 2011.

Please go to one of these free Forums for help in removing your bad malware or rootkits.

Please come back and let us know how you made out and when ready, we can help you to get a proper install of NIS 2011. Thanks.

Re: A Recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked..

I had formatted the drive twice and then installed NORTON ANTIVIRUS 2008 (NOT NIS 2008)

so there is no question of complete removal of AVG.

But can any one guarantee that the attack can be stopped when i install NIS 2011??

I cant remove Norton Antivirus 2008 until i have complete protection and a GUARANTEE>>>

Thx anyways..

There are no guarantees in life.  Best to follow floplot's advice and find out if you are infected.  It's the safest route.  Some of the newer rootkits survive formatting.

In this case they are referring to Microsoft updates since the exploit is in a Microsoft product. Since you have reinstalled your system it is quite possible that you do not have all updates installed yet and that is what is causing this issue. Using www.windowsupdates.com until it says that there are no more important updates should be among the first things you do on a newly installed system.

I cannot guarantee that upgrading to 2011 would solve this, more likely installing the updates for XP will. But what I basically can guarantee you is that you will get a better and more secure product in NAV2011.
