Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Hi, I have three copies of Norton Ghost 15.  I upgrade one of my laptops from Windows 7 to Windows 10 pro today.  This laptop had a registered copy of Norton Ghost 15 on it.  After the upgrade, the icon in the tray says "Product trial expires in 30 days".  This didn't overly concern me as I still have the Product keys associated with my 3 copies.  Unfortunately none of them work.  The error I get back is "Cannot activate this product using license key <my license key>.  The license key is not valid.  Please enter the correct license key".   Please advise what I should do to correct this problem.  I can provide 1 of the 3 license keys I have if that will help.

Hello, have the same problem here. Live chat is unable to help!

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Try uninstalling G15 and re-install it and then re-activate with your key code, but G15 will only activate on Windows 7.

You will need SSR 2013R2 for Win8.1 and we are still waiting for Symantec to support Win 10. Symantec haven't yet surfaced.

I am afraid that you will need to purchase the above Ghost upgrade (SSR 2013R2), when installed it looks and works the same as G15 but with a couple of extra tweeks.

You can get the trial version here http://www.symantec.com/system-recovery-desktop-edition/

click on "Trialware" on the right.

Me too! I'm having the same problem as @scarecrow3000. I stopped buying Norton products a few years ago because of their appalling attitude to customers, I see nothing has changed in my absence!

For goodness sake Norton, get your act together, we're not asking much. The software works fine with Windows 10 , if only the same were true with our registration codes!

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

As an update to my last message above I have now removed Ghost 15 in favour of Acronis True Image 30 day trial. If only I'd switched sooner, it's so much more user friendly and even supports Windows 10 :) I guess Norton will lose a few customers now W10 has launched which is a shame.., personally I really liked Ghost but hey, if Norton drag their heals over product updates what can they expect?!

Hi. This did not help. look for "aomei backupper" it is free and has enough features for me!

I am trying AOMEI. Works fine on W10 and has enough features for me to stay with it. AND it is free.

Google "AOMEI backupper" for download link!

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Hi,
Thanks for the advice.  I tried uninstall Norton Ghost 15, reinstalled, and applied the latest Live Update (3.2.068) to

the PC.  When I try to activate it, I still get the error "Cannot activate this product using license key <my license key

is listed here>. The license key is not valid. Please enter the correct license key."  Same behavior with all three

licenses.

I tried a PC backup and a File backup on Windows 10 and they appeared to work fine.  Only thing that doesn't work is

registration.   I don't want to uninstall/reinstall the product every 30 days (assuming it would even work).  Please help.

This can't be that difficult a problem to solve.

Thanks

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

There is no solution. Ghost is not supported on any OS after Windows 7. Sorry.

If you like Ghost 15, the closest thing is SSR 2013 R2 Desktop Edition. It is basically the same thing with updates for newer OSs. I don't know if Windows 10 is officially supported yet, but I'm sure it will be. Hopefully, just by an update and not an upgrade.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

I was reading a thread about SSR 2013 R2 having the same problem as Ghost 15. A user found a solution. Have a look here...

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/windows-10-new-software-update-sy...

Try doing the same with Ghost 15 and let us know how it goes. Just beware that Ghost 15 may not be compatible with certain things that have been updated over time... UEFI, newer filesystems, etc.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

The solution in that thread worked! But set compatibility to Windows 7 instead of 8!

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

It didn't work for me.  I set compatibility for Windows 7, then Vista and it still didn't work.  Maybe it is because I had uninstalled it/reinstalled it as part of some of the other suggestions in this thread.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Did you try to reboot? Did you make sure VProSvc.exe was set to Windows 7 compatibility for ALL users after you rebooted?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

@redk9258

Setting Ghost 15 to Windows 7 compatibility was the first thing I tried during my troubleshooting and it didn't work for me hence why I opted for another solution. Since then I've reported the program incompatibility to Microsoft. That said if someone does find a workaround I'm happy to reinstall Ghost again.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Redk9258's solution worked for me ... BUT the solution in the SSR 2013 note should have indicated at Step 10  ... click Apply  then add a 10b ... click OK.   As a matter of fact I didn't even have to enter the License Key.  Ghost 15 just started and ran without the request for a key.

Also worth noting the service to Find, Disable and Stop at Step 2 is Norton Ghost and VProSvc.exe is found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Ghost\Agent.

I hope this helps others.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

The above is not quite correct.   After a Windows Restart (not requested by me - an update I guess) when opening Ghost it once again asked for a license key.  I went through the suggested procedure again and it once again starts without asking for the key.

It's curious though that even after 4 days when it does suggest I'm on a trial version it still says I have 30 days remaining and never decreases.

Did you change compatibility for all users?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Yes I did and also did it for VProTray.exe as well.   It works just fine after doing so but on a reboot (tried that again) it still has a problem.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

It seems that this problem has returned with the latest major update to Windows 10 v.1511 Build 10586.36

Symantec System Recovery Service is no longer showing in the local services and so the trick mentioned for setting program compatibility no longer works. Frustrating!!

Try Veritas for the Ghost upgrade SSR 2013 R4,I think.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

I'm using Ghost 15. It works perfectly on Windows 10 and I've had no issues backing up or restoring my OS. Until now that is since the latest W10 update. Last I heard SSR 2013 wasn't compatible with W10 or has that now changed?

Do you have a link for Veritas? Have they bought up Ghost?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

SSR 2013 R2 is now compatible with Windows 10. Symantec owns / owned Veritas and split it off as a separate company in December.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

I don't know if I'm looking at the right Veritas website but there's lots of waffle to wade through to find anything! I found a trialware version but the website gives no information about what it does and no screen shots of the product in use. At a quick glance I wouldn't even know they sold to the public.

Can you provide me a link so I know I'm on the correct site please?

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Thanks for the link, it seems I was on the right site but they don't want to show any product shots. I did read the data sheet but according to that it only supports Windows 8.1. Are any of you guys actually using it on Windows 10 and has this been verified to be fully supported anywhere?

Additionally I wonder if it supports my C:Drive, a Samsung 850 EVO SSD ?

I notice the application for the trial version asks me to input a Company Name but I want this for private use, I don't have a company.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Great stuff, that works thanks!

I've already installed SSR-2013 and have done several backups since last night. From what I can see so far SSR is not much different from Ghost 15.0 which is helpful. I like the new feature of being able to password protect images though whether I'll use it I don't know.

Thanks again!

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Argh...! Huston we have a problem!!

I notice after creating my recovery disc the Windows Device Manager is now showing an error! Not sure if this occured during installation of SSR or during creation of recovery disc.? Just tried updating the driver for Generic Mount Control Device but Windows says it's up to date.

Any suggestions please?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Can you mount an image? If so, is the error there when it is mounted?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

I don't have Generic Mount device in my Device Manager. I would delete it.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Thanks but I already deleted it. I notice if you click 'Show Hidden Devices' there is a duplicate Generic Mount Device which uses the exact same Symantec driver but this hidden device does not show any errors.

I'm having a much bigger problem right now and that's where to buy a licence for home use? I just spent 20 minutes in a chat session with Symantec and they'd never heard of this software and they rudely ended the chat before we'd finished.

As mentioned earlier the Veritas website is a nightmare to find anything and the link for purchasing takes you to a page where you have to answer stupid question which I don't even understand. It seems this whole outfit is geared up for corporate users, not home users like myself.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Here's one place. I would call them to make sure the license key is included. Maybe they can sell the license with media? I've never dealt with CDW but they have been around for a long time.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Unfortunately that site is a US website, I live in the UK. Do I take it that you don't use this product yourself? If you do how or where did you buy your licence? Try as I might it seems Veritas don't want customers to buy this product.

I notice even the trial is limited in that the recovery disc asks for a product serial which of course is not available on the trial version rendering the trial useless if you can't recover your computer from a backup.

I'm feeling a bit like a guinea pig here, am I the only person trying to use SSR 2013?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

After doing some research and reading the Veritas forums it seems most people are experiencing difficulties buying this product for home use. Those that have bought boxed products from various retailers are finding that Veritas does not accept their licence! This is a rediculous state of affairs. SO now I'm left wondering what alternative backups solutions are available?

I've tried Acronis True Image 2015 which was OK but users of the new product 2016 give it a low rating leaving me once again without any reliable solution. Frustrating!!

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Many people bought it from Symantec directly. I have not dealt with Veritas since it was split in December.

I know nothing of this company....

It is also is listed on amazon.co.uk.

Make sure the license key is included and it is not just media.

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Thanks for your help, I did find the one on Amazon earlier this afternoon and have just emailed the supplier to check on the licence.

Hope Veritas will accept it!

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Hope Veritas will accept it!

Well I'm sure if it comes with a license key it will work. I don't know about the telephone support, but who needs that?

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Well I suppose buying through Amazon I should have better support should I need to return it. I'm always dubious about other online retailers that I've never used before. I noticed a seller on Ebay offering the same product OEM version for around £23 but in the small print he didn't accept OEM returns. Hopefully if the seller on Amazon responds I'll place my order pretty soon, though I might still wait and see how my 60 days trial pans out.

I tried running the recovery disc yesterday and all seemed okay and all drives were visible. It seems rather bizarre that the creation of the recovery disc asked for the serial number but then also gave me an option for using the serial number at every restore session instead, I certainly wasn't asked for one during my test yesterday.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

The reason it asked for the serial number to make the SRD is so you can do Cold Backups without having to enter the key every time. Once you enter the key to activate the product, you do not have to enter it because it will read it from the installation.

BTW, what version do they have up for download? The latest is 11.1.4.55331. This is the one that is compatible with Windows 10.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Ah ha.., thanks for the explanation! Presumably by 'Cold Backups' you mean backups created using the SRD from the recovery environment? I was worried it meant that I wouldn't be able to perform a restore using the trial version. Can you verify this for me please?

Incidentally I now have confirmation that the Amazon disc does include the licence key.

Yes I also have the latest version 11.1.4.55331. installed. I was dubious at first because 'DStain' previously mention SSR 2013 R4

Thanks again for all your help!

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Yes you should be able to do the restore. Having the license key on the SRD is for doing a Cold Backup from the SRD. BTW, this whole key thing works the same way as Ghost15.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

Thanks for the explanation, actually I've never tried doing 'cold backups' with Ghost 15, I guess it's something I probably over-looked or didn't ever need.

BTW, I had an interesting phone call earlier this morning from Veritas. The guy asked how I was getting on with my trial and if I was considering buying a licence for my business? I mentioned that I was a home user and didn't have a business though having used Ghost 15 and it's predecessors for a number of years I would be buying a licence shortly. The tone of the conversation quickly changed and he seemed eager to end the call. I did however mention the difficulties I faced trying to buy a licence through the Veritas website and he promptly said "our product is not aimed at home users", he did however say that I might find an odd copy on the internet somewhere". I mentioned that I had seen it on Amazon and he simply said "you should be okay then". End of call.

So there we have it.., it seems my previous comments about Veritas not wanting our business was spot on! What I do find odd though is why they produce a desktop edition? Personally I think they're losing custom by not catering for the home user, currently there's very few good backup solutions on the market.

Kudos0

Re: Registered Ghost 15 turns to trial after Win10 upgrade

They produce the Desktop edition because many businesses use desktop and laptop computers.
