Removal of a large amount of files this morning

This morning I received a message that a large amount of files are risks and they shoul dbe removed. These were older files I have installed on my system for a long time. Now several programs are not working anymore. The report states that they of Categories: Heuristic Virus. Is there a bug I can't believe that all of a sudden all these files are infected.

For your review I attached the threat and removal report.

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

The more background you can give us the more we can help ...

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

I run Win 7 64-bit. NIS 19.2.0.10. Now when I download SkypeSetup.exe Norton reports that this comes from an unknown source. Same with Calibre a prgram that I use for over a year. What is going on?

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

Hi aheinlein:

Just a quick heads-up.

I can also confirm that this Skype file is safe.

Please give us the data that Hugh requested and we can troubleshoot further.

Thanks,

Atomic_Blast :)

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

I do not have an error message but NIS is blocking access. The version of NIS is 19.2.0.10. I use IE 9.0.8112.16421. I use WIN 7 64-Bit  and I update my system regularly. The protocols and scanning and removing results are attached. Let me know if you need more. NIS is blocking Skype from accessing the internet. It does the same for Calibre a book management software. When I downloaded Skype and Calibre IE and Norton told me that the source is not known or does not have enough information about it (or something similar).

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

Hi aheinlein:

Go with AllenM's post below.

I did not fully review the Scanning Results.txt file.

If the MBAM scan is clean we can always Remove and Reinstall NIS 2012.

Thanks,

Atomic_Blast :)

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

I am more concerned about why all the file details shows blank.

aheinlein, are you having any other symptoms of problems besides this?

As a precaution, please run a FULL scan with NIS and then also the FREE version of MalwareBytes. Please see below.

Please download, install, update and run the free version of MalwareBytes following the procedure outlined below. Any other recommendations will follow after you have a chance to provide any other details requested.

Please go to www.malwarebytes.org

Download the free version of MalwareBytes only, do not get the paid version as it will interfere with your Norton product. Please ensure that the "Update MalwareBytes" and "Launch MalwareBytes" options are checked during installation.

Then scan your computer using the full scan option. When scanning is completed, please click on "Show Results". Make sure that all detected threats are checked and click on "Remove Selected".

Please attach the MalwareBytes log to your post using the "Add Attachments" link at the bottom of the reply editor.

Restart your computer and see if your original problem is still present.

Note: Sometimes the main site is blocked from attempts to download MalwareBytes. If this occurs please try to download from:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

Hi aheinlein:

It appears that the files listed in your Scanning Results.txt file are all compressed files.  See if the problem disappears when you temporarily disable compressed file scanning (Settings | Computer Settings | Computer Scans | Compressed Files Scan OFF).

If that stops the heuristic detections, see Rogerror thread here titled 90 Heuristic Threats Identified on a Full Scan.  Other NIS 2012 users have been able to solve this problem by performing a clean re-install of NIS 2012 with the Norton Removal Tool using the instruction posted here.

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

Yes, another issue I am having is that since a couple of weeks I have an issue that when I reboot the PC is not dicovering a bootable device. It is an intermittend issue and I get resolved by using the original Win7 DVD running the repair option.

Re: Removal of a large amount of files this morning

Hi aheinlein:

It's difficult to tell if the two problems are related, but a faulty NIS installation could be interfering with your system boot-up as well.  According to the Symantec support article here titled Enable Boot Time Protection:

"When this option is set to Off, specified drivers and plug-ins start functioning only after a specified time delay."

I believe the default for this setting for NIS 2012 is Off.  Other users have found that changing their boot time protection (Settings | Real Time Protection | Enable Boot Time Protection) from Off to Normal or Aggressive has solved slow boot-ups (see ferenzzz's post here in the thread NIS 2012 Very Slow While Starting Up PC).

I would still suggest that you perform a clean re-install of NIS 2012 using the step-by-step instructions posted here.  If you're lucky it may fix both problems at the same time.
