Remove "Mac Ads Cleaner"

I have a problem with an adware program calling itself "Mac Ads Cleaner."  I tried removing it like I would any normal application, but it keeps reinstalling itself.  Norton doesn't seem to see it.

Thanks,

-Bill

Re: Remove "Mac Ads Cleaner"

I tried dragging the application file to the file scan and Norton found a trojan in the application file which it deleted.  So I deleted the application file after it was  "cleaned."  However, a popup appeared when I went to empty the trash, so I'm not sure that the cleaning is complete.  Full Scan beginning now.

Mac Ads Cleaner is an PUP (potential unwanted program). It popups fake threats and system problems that attempted to scare the user purchase their product.

You can follow this blog to remove  "Mac Ads Cleaner".

Thank you.  I ended up using MalwareBytes (didn't know they had a Mac version) in combination with your suggestions.  Thank you.

Re: Remove "Mac Ads Cleaner"

Hello,

I checked that blog above, and tried AdBlock Master on the Apple Store as well. And that app did not help me out. Then I found the below video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LlkHl34zGQ and it worked for me: trash the app, clean up remains.

Thanks.

Re: Remove "Mac Ads Cleaner"

FWIW I've seen Mac Ads Cleaner upload onto my computer only when using Firefox.  I do not use Chrome.  It does not upload when using Safari.  I am running Yosemite so I am unsure if this program shows up when using Chrome or Safari with El Capitan or Sierra.  After deleting Mac Ads Cleaner and another folder titled  "MAC_OSX" (?) I deleted Firefox.  I haven't had any issues since.

Re: Remove "Mac Ads Cleaner"

A lot of adware programs can't be easily deleted. Their authors use all the tricks to have remnants stay on the device and trigger all those nasty popups. Antivirus does not flag adware as it is not considered as virus. Only specific anti-malware can remove adware completely. Malwarebytes mentioned above is good. Some other can be found here: http://macsecurity.net/view/133/
