Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Hi All

Since I have a one PC license, if Symantec is moving toward the 3 user license, then can the additional renewal be bought from the 1 to the 3 and can it be used on a relatives computer. At least that way, there is some value for  being able to purchase a 3 user license. As there is no discount option for just a 1pc user.See my previous posts on trying to find the best price available. I have 5 days left to make this decision. I only have one PC but there is no difference in the price between the 1 and 3 pc user hence the relative question.

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Hi mo,

Before I get into the explanation, I want all the readers to take note of 3 very different terms I'll use: Subscription Renewal, Update and Upgrade. They are all defined in this announcement:

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Announcements&thread.id=12

Onto the show.  When you purchase a subscription renewal, you are renewing the previous subscription you purchased. So if you bought a subscription to a 1 PC license, when you subsequently purchase a Subscription Renewal, you extend the life of that 1 PC subscription. There is currently not a way to purchase additional licenses as part of a subscription renewal, as the sole function of this purchase is to renew the license of your current subscription. Making sense so far?

It sounds like you want to find the most cost efficient way to get a 3 PC license for your NIS/NAV product. The best way is to get an Upgrade or the Full Version. There are many different coupons available for these from certain stores. Please let me know if you have other questions, or if I've misunderstood your question. Thanks!

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Part of Mo's question had to do with the sharing of the 3pc licence.  It was my impression that a 3pc licence would have to be in one user's name.  Mo needs to confirm if multiple users are acceptable on a multiple licence.

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Hi

I am assuming I am looking at the subscription renewal .

This is my dilemma

To renew/upgrade $79.99 both for 3pcs Now for 1pc it is the same price regardless.

To buy a new NIS2009 or full product $99.99 but I am certain to get the 3 PC user Licenses.  Ideally I would like a 1 PC renewal at a respectable price as Symantec has geared everything for people with more than one PC there is no other option but to renew at $79.99 and stay with The one PC option.

However when I talked to Chat I got the impression I would be entitled for the 3 PC option when I renewed.

I know it sounds like a drama but I have not found this experience easy.....Trying to get the best deal for my dollar does not work in Australia .I would be more than happy if someone could prove me wrong and point me in the right direction! Now I live in the country so a variety of big stores is not an option.Sorry for my tale of woe!!

Mo: NO, I want information about renewing with just a 1 PC user renewal not the 3PC user renewal that is offered online from the Symantec store in Australia. Can you help?
T: Do you have the product with you?
Mo: I have my current subscription on my PC that ends in 14 days and I want to renew it with just a 1 pc user renewal not a 3 pc user renewal. Is this possible? Thanks
T: May I know which product you are using?
Mo: Yes, it is Norton Internet security 2009
T: Mo,Thank you for the requested information.
T: Mo, You are facing the issue of renewing your Norton Internet Security 2009 for a single computer, Am I right?
Mo: Yes
T: Not to worry, I am here to help you.
Mo: Thank you
T: Mo, Renewing charge of the product for a single computer and three computer remains same.  No extra charge is taken for renewing the product for three computer.
T: You need to pay only the same amount for single computer and three computer.
Mo: So I can not buy a 1 pc renewal for cheaper!
T: The thing is that by purchasing the renewal you can activate the product in three computer with a single product key.

The last statement did throw me.Any other thoughts on this

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Hi Mo,

Hope I can provide some answers for you.

1. The renewal for NIS 2009 costs 79.99$ irrespective of whether it is for 3 PC user or 1 PC User. This is because, 3 PC User license will be using same Product key for 3 licenses(to install on 3 different computers), and so a single renewal will reflect on all those 3 computers.

2. When you buy an upgrade, you are buying the newest version of the Norton product at a discounted price. You install this new product to replace your current product. The actual price of NIS 2009 is 99.99$ (check this LINK), but you are getting it for 79.99$ (Check this LINK)as a discount so that you can purchase new NIS 2009 program in the same price of the subscription renewal. A subscription is a service that you purchase to continue to receive updated versions of specific files, called virus definition files or content filter lists. When you renew your subscription, you buy the service (and the files that the service provides) for another year. Since Subscription is a service, it does not include any additional User License to install on other computer. Hence, you cannot install it the 1 User License program on 3 computers after subscription renewal. You can continue to use the same Norton program until the subscription ends. The difference with purchasing upgrade for 79.99$ is that you can install the NIS 2009 program upto 3 computers, which is not possible with subscription renewal.

3. The cost of Upgrade will be 79.99$ irrespective of 3 User License or 1 User License.

Let me know if you have any more queries regarding this.

However, only mo will be able to confirm that.

Mo had a second part to the question which doesn't appear to me to be answered.  Can a person purchase, he would not be able to renew 1 for 3, and have a second person use part of the licence.  This would reduce what seems to me to be a rather high cost for one licence.

Are we getting it, Mo?

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Mo,

A couple of points --

You are in Australia not the USA/CAN and Tony W may not have realized this. I think I'm right in saying that some countries don't have single PC versions for some of the products. So if that is what the Australian Symantec says, stick with it and complain if it is not correct.

The licence you get with a 3 PC version does not seem to be specified with anything approaching clarity. I've looked and on the Product page there is a double dagger footnote which does not specify what it means and on the Legal pages I've read the Licence and it says something like  "Use on 1 PC or such number as otherwise specified"

I can't find a EULA for Norton on my pc -- if anyone knows the name of the file I'll look again.

I thought I'd seen a reference to "relatives" or "household" somewhere but that could easily have been for some other software and I have not found it on the Symantec website.

The US military has a guideline on one topic: "Don't ask; don't tell"

Firstly a big thanks to all who replied!

Yogesh I use this link for the download

http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat1/ec_Main.Entry17C?SID=27688&SP=10023&CID=0&PID=973108&PN=1&V1=973108&V2=&V3=&V4=&V5=30006288&trackingid=cat_title&CUR=36&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=197077

Now I hate to ask do I remove my old NIS for this or is it just a case of going through the steps in the link? and it will do everything else?

Thanks for the feedback -- no doubt that is why they told you about there being no difference between the 1 PC and the 3 PC licences.

Note they are are not X User licences -- you could have 10 people using one of them and it would be licit.

I see the word "household" and clearly it is used to distinguish from business installations. So it would seem not to matter where the household PCs are located -- after all you can use your laptop anywhere round the world!

I hope your download turns out to be the 16.5.0.134/135 version! If not keep running until you get all the updates and if there's a problem sing out!

BTW If you install On Top of the older one it will take over settings and white/black lists as you install which can be a help with email spam lists as I found out on one occasion before I knew this and did a clean install and then had to retrain the spam filters. I beleive there may be a tool or a function in the old software to save these so check if this is important.

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

You can remove NIS through Add/Remove programs before installing NIS 2009. Even if you didn't remove, the Norton installer will automatically detect and remove NIS from your computer during installation. If you face any issues with installation, then only you need to use the Norton Removal Tool. Let us know how it goes.

[Edit: Replaced Norton 360 with NIS 2009, thanks Hugh]

Mo,

I just now noticed that your signature shows NIS 2009. So, if you already have NIS 2009 installed, no need to uninstall and reinstall. Click on Subscribe Now from the main window, enter the new product key and click Next. This will update your NIS 2009 product to the new one you purchased.

Hi mo,

It should show 3 pc, but there may be a glitch because you are moving from a 1 pc to a 3pc.

Since you went to Live Chat and they said "it should be now showing in my Norton account", go to your Norton Account page, and hit the refresh button.

You should have received a confirmation email with your order. What does that show?

mo -- ONLY ONE THING TO DO -- speak to customer support after you've found that confirmation if it mentions 3 PC since they are dealing with your subscription and they said your 1 PC would become 3 PC.

From what  Tony Weiss said in his reply to your first post:

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

RENEWING a single PC always gives a single PC version.

But he is US based although at Symantec HQ and should have a world wide picture he may not have known you were in Australia as I mentioned earlier.

As I see it no-one here can do anything -- only Australian Customer Support.

I will go back to the confirmation email and check from there. It's just a very confusing ,How would you go from a 1pc to a 3pc by any other means there should be a easier way than this? the Australian site actually dated my upgrade from the 30th where as I did it on the 31st so that tells me there maybe an US connection somewhere and in my account it starts from the 1st april.

You would either need to purchase the 3 PC full version or the 3 PC Upgrade. There is not an option currently to get a Subscription Renewal from 1 PC to 3 PC. The subscription renewal is just that -- renewing your existing subscription. Please send me the Customer Support agent information through PM, and I'll research this issue some more. Thanks!

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Hi hugh that was for the disc in a store sorry if I did not clarify that point,on the internet I could buy the 1pc but it still cost the 3pc price(That was upsetting) This is for RENEWAL of subscription.

Anyway I am under the impression all is well as I UPGRADED (per what Yogesh suggested) through a site that is in this thread. That stated it was for a 3pc user download albeit a little ambiguous in the fine print!

I went to Online chat 2 times to check out that although in my Norton account it still only shows for 1 PC,That all will be well.In the last chat I was assured in that although it only shows the 1pc THE KEY is good for 3pcs.

Now I just wanted to be made clear on this point that this is indeed correct as I do not want to be downloading and installing then come to the final put the key in and all goes pear shaped! I hope you can understand my concern in this.

My other concern is if Symantec is indeed phasing out the 1pc license will it be much easier for any others on this planet to UPGRADE from a 1pc to a 3pc without all the uncertainty I have been through.

I Like this product and it suits my needs of having the smart firewall combined with the Anti virus.I did look at the the other combinations avalible but I could  not get past the  ease of use( it's easy to use) of NIS2009.Tony could you make a note of making this change easier or put a How to script somewhere? thanks to all who helped me.

This Forum is the jewel in Symantecs Crown= A great resource.Easy to use.Fantastic input.A lot of fun!

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

I think I understand what you are saying but I'm not sure any of understand what your Customer Support contact was doing .....

So far as I know the 1 PC and the 3 PC software is identical and it is the KEY that determines whether you are actually able to activate on 1 PC or on 3 PCs (or more since there are 5 and 10 PC packages too). Ratther like with VISTA where the single DVD contains all the different versions of VISTA from Home Basic to Ultimate and it is the KEY that determines which you can activate.

So if you have not tried to activate a second PC yet I think you have to wait to see what Tony Weiss comes back with (and what actually does happen if you try a second installation) <g>).

What I do know is that my Norton Account does correctly reflect the nature of the KEY used -- 1 PC or 3 PC -- although I wish it also said how many of those I'd used at any time.

Didn't know they existed! And I bet most people don't either. Shows how different it can be in different countries .... REMINDER -- always ask what country someone is in when they post a problem!

So I gather your installation is working OK on your one machine and that you/we are waiting to hear more from Tony about the overall position and the number of PCs covered.

Re: Renewal from a 1pc user can I renew to a 3pc user license?

Hi Hugh

Yes all is working OK,had a mild panic when I put the key in to activate it as all live updates stopped,I could manually do them but the pulse etc was not working,Then I thought oh maybe I have to do a restart which I did now all is happy!

I did not think to put the key in at first as all was working,so I'm assuming it was working off the last 4days that was left on the other key.

Well at least you are protected while waiting!

There just doesn't seem to be a simple procedure for going from a single PC version to a 3 PC version .... perhaps you'll create one!

Tony Have you confirmed my license issue? Is it good to go on 3PCs like Chat has indicated?

I have a 2nd PC that I will be trying it out on soon, and would like to be sure  that when NIS goes on it I will have no issues. Thank you for your time.
