Repeated "Location Services turned off" notifications from Android 9 on Pixel

I recently updated my daughter's Pixel phone to Android 9, and ever since that time Norton Family has been issuing e-mail notifications every few minutes that Location Services have been turned off when they haven't.  I confirmed that battery optimization is not turned on for Norton Family, and that it does have proper access to Location Services on the device.  Please report this issue to the development team and let me know if there's anything we can do in the interim until a fix is available.

Hi @JitterBox,
We are investigating this issue. We would like to have some more information to understand this issue better. We assume that you are using the latest version (4.8.1.11).

  • What was the maximum number of notifications you saw in a day
  • Are you still seeing multiple notifications in the lst few days?
  • Do you think your upgrade to Android P was the trigger after which you are seeing the notifications?

Thanks and regards,
Norton Family team

Re: Repeated "Location Services turned off" notifications from Android 9 on Pixel

Hi, I'm a web and mobile software developer myself, so feel free to ask if you have more technical questions that I can answer.

  • I received about 72 notifications on Sunday, 8/19...they were inconsistent, as frequent as every minute and as infrequent as every 15 minutes or so.
  • The notifications stopped for about 12 hours after I uninstalled and reinstalled the Norton Family app as a chat support agent recommended, but then they resumed again with the same frequency as before.
  • Yes, the upgrade to Android P was definitely the trigger.
  • I had also verified that Norton Family was whitelisted from battery optimization, since it seemed like that might be related.

Please let me know if there's anything I can try, or if you have a beta build you'd like me to test.

Re: Repeated "Location Services turned off" notifications from Android 9 on Pixel

I have the same issue with my son's phone.  He has a Pixel and it was upgraded to Android P.  I went through all the troubleshooting step and nothing worked to fix the issue.  One additional thing I did notice, when I went to turn off and turn back on the Location services access for Norton, the phone stated that this version of Norton Family (4.8.1.11) is not compatible with the version of Android.

So this is clearly not an isolated user-specific issue. I know it's not a simple thing to add compatibility with a new version of Android, but I assume you've been prepping your support for Android 9 in Norton Family...how soon can we expect a fix or a workaround?

Hi @JitterBox and @ashaman112,
We are trying to reproduce this issue locally. Can you please share a screenshot of the error message you have mentioned? Did you see this immediately after upgrade to Android 9 (4.8.1.11 being already installed prior to the upgrade to Android 9)? If not, can you kindly brief the exact steps that you did that led to you reproducing the issue?

Thanks and regards,
Norton Family team

Re: Repeated "Location Services turned off" notifications from Android 9 on Pixel

There's nothing within the Norton Family Android app itself that is involved here...there is no visible error.  I simply receive repeating e-mail notifications every few minutes from the Norton Family service with the title "Location Services Turned Off".

This occurred only immediately following the upgrade to Android 9 on the Google Pixel.  No changes were made the the device configuration.  As a fix I even uninstalled and reinstalled the application and the issue stopped for a number of hours but then resumed.  As I mentioned previously, I verified that Battery Optimization was turned OFF for the app, and that all of the required permissions were set properly, as they had been before the Android 9 upgrade.

To reproduce this you should simply need to install the Norton Family app on a Google Pixel device running Android 9, although obviously there may be other apps or system settings that are involved.

I only had 300 emails about "Location Services Turned Off" this week.

It is affecting my son's device as well. All since his Pixel upgraded to Pie. In addition, I am also getting notification about Accessibility being turned off, although those messages are not nearly as numerous as the location ones.

This was posted almost 2 weeks ago and has been confirmed by multiple users.  Can you at least tell us whether the issue is being worked on or provide us with an ETA on a fix?

I have less than a week left in my Norton Family subscription, and you're not giving me any good reasons to renew.

I signed up for the Norton Beta program, although they didn't list Norton Family as an available product in the dropdown list...if there's another way or another place to sign up for the Beta program, can you please post the link here for clarity? How soon is the beta expected to be ready?
