Restore Failed

I'm trying to restore a backup but it fails immediately. Logs show my last backup ran successfully to an external HDD. There's no error messages, just a red X status beside all files that failed to restore. If I hover the over red X it simply says "Restore failed".

 I've tried the following:

- Took ownership of source & destination drives - Fail

- Added full access permissions (my user, admin & system) of source & destination drives - Fail

- Restoring only a single file - Fail

- Restoring using the Norton Security program

- Restoring using portable restore ARestore.exe - Fail

Re: Restore Failed

Is there any error message other than restore failed?
I wonder if something under Norton itself is preventing the restore?
Can you use the Norton icon under Computer to browse the backup & then try to restore the file/s that way?

Tbh I’ve found Norton to be extremely poor when it comes to backup & restore, it’s ok for restoring files which you’ve accidentally deleted but not for restoring all files after a clean install of Windows. It also takes a long time to backup as it does all the files every time & not just new & changed files.

I moved to Macrium which is so much better.

Re: Restore Failed

Hi Twilight Princess. No other error messages anywhere. That's what makes this so frustrating. I can browse the backup and select files through the Norton program & the portable restore ARestore.exe, but both fail to restore. I reinstalled Norton but that didn't help either.

I already cloned my storage drive, so I'm good. I only wanted to restore a few files from an older backup. I'm glad I didn't have to rely on it for disaster recovery.

I will be switching to Macrium too. I've been using Reflect for imaging many years and it's always reliable.

Re: Restore Failed

I’ve relied on Macrium for a couple of years now & tbh I don’t know how I managed without it. I no longer worry if a driver or Windows update messes up the PC, I just restore the latest image.
It’s easy to restore a backup & I can browse the image.

Re: Restore Failed

Hello Jerry. Did you copy the ARestore.exe file into the root directory where the backup file is on the external HDD? Please see this article.

Re: Restore Failed

I have to ask if you have mapped the external drive to a drive letter in Windows? It sounds like you may have done this as it is required to make the backups in the first place. Be sure the drive letter is the same as when you created the backups.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Restore Failed

Hi SoulAsylum. I used the ARestore.exe that was already on the root of the backup drive. I followed the article and copied both ARestore.exe and Arestore.loc, but restore is still failing. Thx for the suggestion.

Re: Restore Failed

Hi Norton Fighter. Yes, I made sure all drive letters were the same. Tried restoring to the original location, and to another drive, but both fail.
