Re: Retirement Announcement for Norton TM ConnectSafe

Interesting find. How would anyone know about this unless they went to the ConnectSafe site? You do not register so they cannot know who is using it to send emails. One day your system just stops responding. And they may not even be able to get to the forums to ask what is wrong.

I hope Norton/Symantec handle this one correctly.

Re: Retirement Announcement for Norton TM ConnectSafe

Apparently the announcement was ready on the 17th of July, but only today it appeared in Product Update Announcements.

I myself realize that I have to adjust my router's DNS assignments, but I wonder how many users really remember or even know that they are using Connectsafe.

Just an FYI

When announcements are imminent, the moderators often have a draft post ready to go. It is hidden from the forum until they are ready to post. When it is published, it still shows the date the post was created.

Re: Retirement Announcement for Norton TM ConnectSafe

Still wonder if I want to be without some extra protection.

I am considering this alternative :
https://www.quad9.net/

Any opinions?

Re: Retirement Announcement for Norton TM ConnectSafe

I would use Quad9 here but my ISP will not allow me to connect to their local servers, meaning I have latency while connecting to California instead of connecting to Sydney.

Re: Retirement Announcement for Norton TM ConnectSafe

Quad9 does not seem to offer the filtering options that ConnectSafe does. ie for adult and porn sites. I need this feature to keep visiting grandchildren safe.

I'm trying OpenDNS, which does seem to be blocking those sites with the default free option.

Re: Retirement Announcement for Norton TM ConnectSafe

How is that Krusty? Quad9 has servers all over the world (as 9..is the IBM domain on the internet) and the nearest server should always be selected.

In Holland we most of the times end up in the Amsterdam Exchange, one of the most important internet exchange points in Europe.

Did you test latency compared with Connectsafe?

Hugo, it is my ISP preventing me connecting to Quad9 in Sydney.  I have exchanged many emails with Quad9 trying to figure it out and traceroute reveals it skips Sydney and connects instead to one of the Californian servers.  I guess it boils down to some business relationship.  Last I heard, Quad9 were in discussion with my ISP so hopefully the issue will be resolved eventually.

Current latency:

I know others in Australia not with my ISP who don't have this issue and connect to the nearest Quad9 server.

Norton ConnectSafe isn't the fastest DNS servers for me (using GRC's DNS Benchmark) but at least I can access their Sydney server.

No such issue with 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare), or some other public DNS providers.
