Run backup now

Right-clicking the Norton icon in the notification toolbar brings up the quick launch window with menu items. All the menu items work except Run backup now. When it's clicked, it just disappears. I was on the chat helpline for over an hour before the technician removed and reloaded Norton. That worked until I turned off the computer and restarted it. Now it's back to the problem. Notice that I can back up the computer by opening the main security window and doing it from there, but it's a bother. Any ideas? I often use the simple way and it's aggravating not having it.

I'm using Windows 10 and Norton 360.

Thanks.

Re: Run backup now

I do not see a Run Backup Now option when I right click the Norton icon for my Norton 360 Deluxe on Win 10 1903.

What is your Norton Version? Click on Help > About.

What is your Windows version? Click start menu and type winver and enter.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

I don't know how to put a screenshot into this box. The menu above doesn't look like mine at all.

Re: Run backup now

Are you sure you have Norton 360 installed? Your product is listed as Norton Security, and you show no options for the new VPN product. The image I posted above was for a Norton 360 installation. The image you posted matches my Norton Security installation.

When I do click on the Run Backup Now on my Norton Security Premium it does bring up the backup interface, and complete's the backup.

You say you turn off the computer and restarted again. Have you turned off Windows Fast Startup feature? If not, you are not getting a full shutdown required to fully update programs like Norton. If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.

Re: Run backup now

Fast Startup is turned off. My subscription is listed as 360 Premium, but I've had the Run Backup Now menu item for some time and it's always worked until a few days ago.

Yesterday, the Norton Chat person removed and reinstalled the program and the Run Backup Now worked. Today, after having shut the computer down overnight, it's not working again.

I can't really tell you what Norton product is installed since I was going by what my account pages tell me. If it's something different, I don't know how it happened - but I like the Run Backup Now feature.

Re: Run backup now

In your Norton Account, do you also have a Norton Security subscription still active?

If you do want the new 360 product on your device, you can go into your Norton Account and take note of the product key for your 360 product. Then open your current product and click on Help > Enter Product Key. That will initiate the update to the new product. But remember, it appears that you will lose your Run Backup Now link from your system tray icon.

Re: Run backup now

Evidently I have had Norton Security Premium installed for a couple of years now. I don't remember changing it from 360, but it must have happened when I had previous trouble.

Is there a way for me to remove and reinstall Security myself? It takes forever with the Chat folks.

And if I do that, how do I keep the Run Backup Now feature from taking another walk? Make sure the Windows Fast Startup is disabled?

OH. You were referring to the older Norton 360 offering from a few years ago. There is a 'New' 360 product introduced over the last year. Thus my confusion.

For reinstalling your product, just download and run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from   www.norton.com/nrnr   Be sure you are using a  Windows Admin account when you run this. Also, be sure that after reinstall, you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

If there is some issue with your installation that affected your Run Backup, the reinstall should resolve that. There is no setting that affects that. But remember if you do allow the upgrade to the new 360 product that is being offered by Norton, you will lose that link when you right click the Norton icon.

As for Fast Startup, that is completely controlled by Windows. Even if you turn the feature off, it has been known to be turned back on when you receive the semi annual 'feature updates'. ie going from ver 1903 to ver 1909. So just be sure you check after you get one of these updates from Windows.

Re: Run backup now

I removed and reinstalled Norton Security and immediately started downloading live updates. There were a couple of patches involved that restarted the computer. When all was accomplished, the Run Backup Now is dead as ever.

I don't know if it ever worked after the procedure and disappeared when the computer restarted. If so, then something in my computer is deleting that particular function on startup, and if that's the case, I'm worried that Norton is vulnerable to being changed.

Any thoughts of how to look at coding or other ideas?

Re: Run backup now

Are you sure it is Norton Security that got installed this time? On your main Norton screen, to the right side, do you see My Norton, or More Norton?

Is the Run Backup Now item still showing in the menu list when you right click on the Norton icon in the System Tray?

Re: Run backup now

It seems no doubt that I have Norton Security with backup.

Yes, I still have the Run Backup Now menu item, but when it's clicked, the popup menu disappears just as if you clicked outside the quick window.

It became blurry when I reduced the picture size - sorry.

Re: Run backup now

Is there a way to contact Norton technical assistance? They should know if something is playing with their features.

Re: Run backup now

Support via a chat or call is the only avenue I am aware of for getting tech assistance. Nothing is playing with the Norton features from where I'm sitting. The forums would be seeing others posting with the same issues if that were the case. What is happening most likely is confusion over the new products, how they work and what is no longer a creature feature.

Re: Run backup now

All: Another admin, Sunil_GA has looked into the question of why the "Run backup now" is no longer available in the new N360 products context menus. They are stating its by design and not a bug in the software.

Re: Run backup now

Burton, I am running the NEW Norton 360 Deluxe as shown in my screenshot. It doesn't have the context feature run backup now.  Your screenshot from your Norton account indicates you are running Norton Security with Backup10 devices, an older product, not Norton Security Premium, Premier or a NEW N360 product. Could you please verify the version of the product you have installed? Here is how to get that infoMy thinking is that the update to 22.19.9.63, if it installed did away with that context menu's ability to function.

Edited: According to this article your product, as shown in your screenshot is eligible for the 22.19.9.63 update.

Re: Run backup now

My versions of Norton Security is indeed 22.19.9.63.

So, I have to send Norton engineers cake and cookies to let them know how much I like the feature and please restate it?

Re: Run backup now

Since this is by design I wouldn't think anything will be released in an immediate fashion to re-add the context function back. Symantec employee Sarojak states in an earlier post they are investigating. I would wait out a response from the team.

Re: Run backup now

Thanks @SoulAsylum / @Burton Voss for the discussion , "Run Backup Now" option in System tray is not available by design in New Norton 360 and user can access from "Open My Norton" menu from System tray

"Run Backup Now" option is available in previous Norton products (Norton Security with Backup and old Norton 360) , As @Burton Voss reported "Run Backup Now" is not working as expected and the fix is planned in subsequent Product releases
