Safe Search - A Waste - Interesting Article

Interesting article on How To Geek about browser plug-ins designed for safe searching. It only mentions Norton a few times and mainly to comment on the pop-up saying not to use Edge because you can't use Norton Toolbar with it. I have no idea who is correct here and would love to see what the community thinks. Here is the article.

Re: Safe Search - A Waste - Interesting Article

Safe Search offers the ability to block objectionable sites from displaying in search results so, for example, you can prevent porn sites from even appearing at all.  The trade-off is that the search provider is Ask.com.  For that reason, many Norton users do not consider Safe Search a good choice.  Safe Web, on the other hand, works with other search engines, such as Google, and provides safety ratings for sites listed in the search returns, in addition to blocking malicious and phishing web sites.  The Antiphishing feature is so good, in fact, that Neil Rubenking uses it as his benchmark for rating other products and browsers in his PCMag reviews.  It does outperform all browsers alone.

Much as I like HowToGeek, I think in this case they may have overstated the problems with these toolbars based on the sloppiness of one or two vendors.  As for Edge, it is new and unproven.  I would not automatically assume that it is safer to use than established browsers that work with security programs.  What the article said was: "If you’ve been following the development of Microsoft Edge for Windows 10, you’ll know that it’s supposed to be a more secure web browser than Internet Explorer." [bold italics, mine]

Thanks for your explanation. Is there a way to remove Safe Search but keep the Safe Web features?

Re: Safe Search - A Waste - Interesting Article

Just click on the three dots on the Norton Toolbar and turn off the Norton Safe Search option.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
