SCAM..

just bought a new Norton Licence key....  followed the instructions on the Licence card and logged onto http://www.norton.com/setup which is written on the licence card. on the Norton looking site I was asked to Input my   Name.  Tel no, email, Licence key...  which seemed unusual.   I did this and an error message came up on the screen...as below

An Error Has Occurred: N0740E:

Your key has been redeemed successfully but the setup could not be started.

within 5 mins an indian sounding gentleman called me to advise me I had an issue loading Norton...

He supposedly looked up the error message and I had an issue with the drives on my computer which he needed to have access to my computer to fix. I said he would never get access to my comp and he hung up immediately.

The burning question I have here is how the hell did I end up on this Norton looking scam site from a store bought Norton product???    As soon as he called I thought it was a scam but others may believe and get caught...   and how many others have experienced the same thing.....

this is the page I ended upon ...      http :// officeandhomedecor . com/office/Welcome/

Any answers would be good

cheers Dave S

Re: SCAM..

Definitely a scam. Contact the backing establishment you used to purchase this with all your documentation for a fraud refund. Change your Norton account passcode and remove the product that is faked Norton. Just to be on the safe side download Malwarebytes to check for issues. You may also want to run this Symantec tool for added comfort that you are still clean.

Genuine Norton products can be downloaded here.

Hi Dave S:

I clicked the link you posted that was on the license card and it re-directs me to https: // my.norton.com/home/setup.  I didn't try logging in but it certainly looks like the official My Norton Account site at https://my.norton.com/. Is it possible you accidentally typed in a wrong URL that re-directed you to a scam web site?

See northwind72's February 2017 thread Norton Security Deluxe Install which describes an almost identical incident with a Norton product key they purchased from Amazon (i.e., including the error "Your key has been redeemed successfully but the setup could not be started" and a toll-free 1-800 number that connected northwind72 to a suspicious tech support rep who wanted them to use fastsupport.com to start a remote access session).

I'd contact the official Norton Customer Support via Live Chat directly at https://www.norton.com/chat and ask them if there's any record of this phone call on your account.  There is also a link to Live Chat at the left of every web page in this forum that you can use - see the image below.  If this is a scam (and it certainly sounds like one) then Symantec should be shutting this down ASAP.

Re: SCAM..

Perhaps i should report both 'officeandhomedecor' as well as 'fastsupport' to Safe Web?

Re: SCAM..

Hmmm...  Speaking of 'fastsupport' as a gateway being used by criminals, please see:
