Hi,

For the Norton 360 2.0, the issue may be due to background scan running. Norton 360 will do a daily routine scan in background when you are working. If you don't want Norton 360 to perform background scan, you just need to disable the Symantec Tamper protection, end the scan, and then change the Automatic Scan to Manual, so that you can run it independently whenever you need.

Temporarily turn off Norton 360 2.0 Protection
1. Start Norton 360.
2. Click Settings.
3. Under Quick Controls , uncheck SymProtect Tamper Protection.
4. Click Close.

Close Scan process

1. On your keyboard, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
2. In the Windows Security dialog box, click Task Manager.
3. On the Processes tab, click Show processes from all users.
4. In the processes list, select the ScanStub.exe, and then click End Task.

Change the Scan settings

1. Start Norton 360.
2. Click Settings.

3. Click Task Scheduling.

4. In the Automatic Tasks tab, uncheck all the items listed there.

5. In the Scheduling tab, change the Scheduled Scan & Pc Tune up from Automatic to Manual (drop-down menu).

6. Click Close.

Hi HelloNGreetings

Good advice from yogesh_mohan as usual.

Sometimes a scan 'hangs' after completion. The easiest way to terminate the process and start a new scan is to go into task manager, and end all instances of ScanStub.exe.

The same problem often occurs with Live Update.

Hope this helps.

May I please ask if there is a way to stop Norton 360 from keeping me from doing tasks by reporting that it is doing a scan other than rebooting the computer or disabling the tamper protection?  Btw, I have waited 3 hours after initialy trying to run live update or do a scan on the system so I have to think that it is not due to an active event going on in the background as I have been using the computer on a consistant basis before and since trying to run live update and run a scan.

Thank you very much to the people that cruise these forums and post thier knowledge! It is invaluable as I have spent many hours trying to reasearch problems I encounter with 360 both on and offsite of the Symantec website and in many cases I don't learn anything about a solve.

So thank you very much for your time and your knowledge

Re: 'A scan is already running. Please wait until it finishes and try again.'

I appreciate this information as I was wondering if one had to follow all the steps described above to stop the scanning process, unfortunately when I go to the task manager and hit "End Process" I am met with the message "The operation could not be completed   Access is denied".

Just a heads u, at least for myself, on what I encountered when trying this step by itself in case I missed something or others experience something similar.

Thank you much for your time!
