The scan failed because of a scan engine problem. Run LiveUpdate to get the latest version.

I've just installed antivirus on my MacBook Pro (running Lion 10.7.2).  Cannot get anything to work - constantly getting this error message whenever I try to run any kind of scan:

The scan failed because of a scan engine problem.  Run LiveUpdate to get the latest version.

Have run LiveUpdate and the software is fully up to date.

Any ideas?

You need to be on the MAC forum.  The Mods will get you moved over.  In the meantime, you can read other MAC users' suggestions.

Can you tell me what is in this folder:

/Library/Application Support/Symantec/AntiVirus

Specifically, I'm interested in whether there are any folders inside it that have a numeric name, like 20111021.002.

Thanks,

I am experiencing the exact same issue with the exact same error message. In addition, it will not permit me to turn on the automatic virus protection.

Can you check the folder mentioned above? I am wondering if LiveUpdate has downloaded the virus definitions.

Thanks,

Checked it -- nada.  And when I run liveupdate -- which I have several times -- everything downloads except definitions.  So that's clearly the problem.

Is that also why I cannot turn on autoprotect?

Yes, no defs means no scanning can occur, so AutoProtect disables.  I'll check with some others about why the defs might not update.
