Scan hangs and will not start

All I have read through the boards and still cannot find a fix for my issue.  My scan starts but will just hang at "scanning commonly used files"  files scanned stays at zero and when I try to close the sacn it will not close.  Also when my system starts up a "backdoor trojan" alert pops up but will not give specifics.  I have tried scanning my disk, removing and reinstalling NIS 2009, and running the scan in safe mode (runs fin and detects nothing).  At help would be awesoem.

Thanks all.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Interesting. Do both the quick and full system scans hang up when you try to start them? Do you have any other types of security software on your computer that could be conflicting with NIS? When you have NIS 2009 installed are you still able to use liveupdate to get updated virus definitions? It would be strange for a virus to keep you from scanning it but still allow you to keep your security software updated and installed. Could you provide some specs about what version of NIS you are running, what internet browser you are using, etc. With these we can begin to narrow down the possible reasons why norton would be unable to initiate scans.

The following is a link to the official symantec write-up about the Backdoor.Trojan virus. Something in this article may be able to help you solve your problem. It is classified as being a low-risk threat so it is odd that NIS would be unable to remove it upon detection. Perhaps set norton to remove any low-risk threats immediately upon detection (medium and high risk threats are by default removed upon detection). See if that works.

Also, I have a feeling the other members of this forum will soon be recommending this so I think I will beat them to it. If your answer to my question about whether or not you have other security programs already installed on your computer is no (meaning conflicting security programs were not the cause of your problem) and the article I posted from norton is of no help then you could try uninstalling NIS with the norton removal tool and trying one of the following free anti-virus scans that may or may not have better luck removing this virus. While I have never used any of these myself and I am a little paranoid about resorting to "free" anti-virus software many of the veteran norton forum members seem to recommend using AVG anti-virus, superantispyware, or malwarebytes in the rare occasion that norton is unable to remove a threat. Of course since I have never used any of these before I would recommend doing a little research about them and waiting until somone who has used them before recommends them.

Mat,

The first system scans take the longest length of time and some time takes forever.

Our general suggestion has been:

1.  Open the Norton Console

2.  Click on Settings

3.  Set the "Compressed Files Scan" to Off

4.  Go to Scan Exclusions, click on "configure"

5.  Make sure that "\System Volume Information\" is included (without the quotation marks),

6.  Click on \System Volume Information\ and select "edit" and make sure "include subfolders" is checked.

7.  Test this setting and see if you get a complete scan in a reasonable length of time.

If not, report back.

If you do get a reasonably long scan, then you can

1.  go back to the "Compressed Files Scan" and set it to ON

2.  make sure "remove infected files" is ON

3.  make sure "limited data extraction" is ON

4.  Test this setting with a complete scan.

If you are satisfied, you may stick with these settings.

If not, report back here for more advice.

Good luck,

Please do not un-install your Norton Product just to try Anti-Virus Scanners.  If you want another Scanner(s) which you can use along-side you Norton Product, I would suggest Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (excellent On-Demand Scanner) which you do not need to Pay for as you have Norton as your Real-Time Protection, and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition.   As always, make sure you Update them before Scanning, and dis-connect from the Internet.

As I said I have no experience with those particular free security scans. I suppose you do not have to uninstall norton after all.

But matyellot, told you someone would recommend the use of them .

So did you have spy no more installed when you installed NIS 2009 for the first time? Even though I could not find any articles on line mentioning how spy no more and norton behave when installed on the same computer I think that having the two of them together may be causing your problem.

Try uninstalling spy no more and then using one click support in NIS 2009. Report back to us on the results.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Spy No More appears to be a multi-part antivirus, anti-malware program.  The two programs will definitel not run simultaneously.  It is also likely, considering the properties of Spy No More, that the installation of NIS2009 is likely to be corrupted.

Is the pop up saying that this is an unresolved issue?  If so, go to Quarantine, find the malware listed and select Remove (this will delete the Quarantined files from your system).

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Sorry about this but you need to use an 'offline' scanner to clean this out.  This a scanner that does not boot off of your systems hard drive.  I recommend you use the Norton Recovery Tool.  If you got NIS2009 as a boxed product (you have a factory published CD), then you can run this tool from there.  Otherwise you can read how to make the Tool at this KB article .  You will need your subscription key so make sure you have that handy.  You can find it in My Documents\ Symantec folder.  Also online at www.mynortonaccount.com if you set one up.

I hate to add advice when good advice is already being given -- but something vital has been left out.

You should turn off your system restore.

[My Computer - Right click - select properties - click on System Restore - Click on Turn Off System Restore on All Drives - click Apply].

The reason is twofold.  First, much contemporary malware embed themselves in a System Restore File so that when you restore an earlier system, you're back where you started from, malware-wise.

Second, if NIS is trying to scan the System Restore File -- considering that it is a huge! collection, compressed, on many images of the registry and other key components -- it can apparantly freeze trying to work its way through these files; and if it actually tries to delete one, it won't be allowed to, which can create a behavior loop that might lock on the software.

Since you can no longer rely on the integrity of the System Restore, until you know your computer is clear of malware, there is no reason to keep it, for now; and doing so could be dangerous.

Why the scan is successful in Safe Mode, but not in regular mode, I don't know.  My guess would be that something is loaded into the system that is not essential to the system and that it fights removal.  Norton itself fights removal and shut-down in order to protect its integrity from malware.

It is even possible that what is being detected it something that "might" be malware, but is not convincingly enough so that Norton actually removes it.  You get the notice, but no action, tending to make me think your might well be safe.

Still ...

What I'd suggest about this is do the following:

Start>Run

type:

    msconfig

press:

    enter

click on

    Startup

uncheck everything except Norton, Symantec items.

Reboot

If the problem doesn't occur, then you have isolated the problem.

Now check about half the items and reboot again.

Either the problem will occur, or not.  Keep checking or unchecking until you have found the guilty party.

Then leave it unchecked, and report back here.

On the other hand, if the problem is not in startup, move to the Services Tab.

Make sure you check Hide All Microsoft Services.

Then use a similar strategy with the items left behind.

In less than an hour, you will most likely have identified the culprit.

If not, tell us and we'll see what we can do next.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Here is my opinion.

Do all of the above and a little more.

1. Disable system restore.

2. Uninstall spynomore.

3. Reinstall NIS 2009.

4. Turn on early load.

5. Disconnect from the internet.

6. Run a full system scan with compressed file scan enabled.

7. Run the same scan in safe mode.

8. If all goes well turn on system restore again.

9. Let us know how everything turns out.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

My concern is that Norton may be damaged by the installation over top of Spy No More.  If that is the case, simply running a scan is not going to succeed.  To my understanding, the poster has already removed Spy No More, which hasn't solved the problem. I also was unable to locate a removal tool in their support section.  So there may be a couple more issues to deal with.  We will see if Dbrisendine's solution will help the problem with Spy No More gone.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Okay i have gone through all the steps suggested expet for one, I am not sure how to turn on "early load", if I can figure that out then I will run with that process.  to anser some questions so far.

1. When the backdoor trojon is detected it is a small popup in the lower right hand corner of the screen, it simply says "backdoor.trojen detected" it give me no options then fades away in a fre seconds.

2. I cannot set up a schedule fro running scans, the scheduling process asks me for a password for my admin account, however I have never had a password and if I leave it blank it gives me an error.

3.When I download and run the recovery cd it says the virus updates are as of 8/28/2008, and it cannot get updates, after the scan runs and finds nothing, it says "you computer is not protected because your definitions are out of date".

4. I have followed every other step that has been suggested, including turning off system restore, turining off the autoload programs, removing and reinstalling Norton more times then I can count and running the scan in safe mode (works every time).

One final thing that happens when I try to close a hung up scan I get a notifiaction that says "Norton system framework has stopped responing"

Any help wiuld be great as I am about ready to just go to the store and buy a boxed norton 360 to see if that will help.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Hi matyellott-

Wow. Lot's of things going on here. Many cooks in the kitchen.

Can you backup your data to a USB Hard Drive or High Capacity flash drive?

You *might* be better off reloading your system at this point and buying a boxed copy of NIS 2009, would be the best way to start off fresh. If you have a current subscription, the current term can be added to the new term via customer service (telephone.)

You will not need any other Security Software installed after this is done.

Hope this helps.

While there is nothing wrong with having a boxed edition, it is at least two version changes behind which will incur a number of major updates.  It is best to go straight to the newest version for a new installation.

If you choose to go this route, I would recommend downloading the newest version, use the Norton removal tool a couple of times with a reboot in between.  Use Superantispyware free version or Malwarebytes free version to ensure a clean machine before you install.  Then reinstall Norton.

For information, early load should be found in the computer pane under settings. I'm not on my own machine at the moment.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Hi -

I agree that purchasing it online would be the best way to go, if you have a non compromised computer to order and download it to. In addition, you will need a way of transferring NIS 2009 between machines.

FYI - Keep in mind that if you use the NRT, that it will remove other Norton programs on your system.

Sometimes a total system reload in this case is best, if you have an easy configuration.

Please let us know.

Thanks.

Okay I cannot install malebytes, I keep getting errors, I will attempt to use the rmoval tool, several times and see if this works, I really do not want to do a system wipe, as I jave tons of data and if the backup dosen't take I will be screwed.  The fact that the scan runs in safe mode leads me to believe that it is somethin with the regular windows startup, to be honest I would rather just run a scan in safemode once a week then wipe the drive.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Hi matyellott -

I understand, but you really *need* to start backing up that data to another storage device.

Once you migrate the data (and just the data) you can scan it on another "known good" machine which is protected to ensure that you are not bringing anything unintended over (i.e. viruses, malware.) As for the removal tool, only use it twice, if it doesn't work by then, it is not going to. The scan runs in safe mode beacuse several other processes are not active at that point in time. You are not fully booted.

Sorry that I am coming in at the end of these postings, but I really feel strongly about having your data stored safely!

If the gods are on your side, it is just a bad installation because of the Spy No More.  Once you get a clean installation it should proceed smoothly.  It would be better to ensure that your computer is malware free before you install since malware hates Norton and can also damage it.

You could also try SAS here www.superantispyware.com

Things are looking up Matyellott:

I would suggest that you make sure that the items in the MBAM quarantine are deleted so as not to show up in a scan.  Once you are ready to remove NIS disconnect from the internet until the removal is accomplished a couple of times, reinstall and only reconnect when it is time to activate it.  Then you can do your updates and run a full system scan.  Malwarebytes will not cause any scanning problem.

Re: Scan hangs and will not start

Okay usb scan found 61 issues, including several torjan I quatertned all of them, reinstalled antivirus disconnected from the internet, scan still will not run.  This is quite upsetting i pay for this product to protect me and not so many things have gotten by.
