Scan from printer to network folder doesn't work. Firewall issue?

After spending 2-3 hours in a chat session with HP support (HP 8720 printer) they assured me that my printer/scanner is working properly and that the reason that I can't scan from the printer to a network folder is certainly not their problem(!) My chat buddy suggested that my router settings are preventing the inbound connection to my computer, and that makes a little bit of sense to me although I am not enough of a network wizard to understand what settings to tinker with. The other possibility of course is whatever firewall parameters are currently set. So... Windows 10 says that Norton is in control of my firewall. Could someone suggest a rule to allow an inbound connection from my printer to my computer (and tell me how to install the rule)? Is there a way to determine if the firewall has blocked such a connection attempt? It doesn't matter if I have a complete (wireless<->router<->computer) connection, or if the connection is ethernet on each hop. The results have been the same... Many thanks! Al

Re: Scan from printer to network folder doesn't work. Firewall issue?

Hello Al. The fastest way to first determine the Norton Firewall is the issue is to temporarily disable it from the system tray icon. Right mouse click the Norton icon and disable the firewall. Try to rescan a document. Lets try that to begin with and see what the results are.

You may want to check your windows settings, see if Windows is managing your printers. Uncheck "Let Windows manage my default printer".

Is the printer connected directly to the network, ethernet or wifi, and where is the folder you are trying to save to?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Scan from printer to network folder doesn't work. Firewall issue?

I tried your ( SoulAsylum ) suggestion to temporarily turn off the Norton firewall settings, and the results were the same as before: still doesn't work.  So I'm inclined to think either 1) the router is blocking the connection (Netgear 4500v3), OR 2) the HP printer firmware is not doing the right thing (and my experience with the latest HP firmware is Not Encouraging).  I have the printer attached through an ethernet hub, and when I attempt to start a scan, the lights on the hub flash enough to suggest that the request is actually going through to the router.  Anyway, I still (4/13/18) don't have a solution...

Re: Scan from printer to network folder doesn't work. Firewall issue?

I have tried all of:

1) computer to router via wireless LAN, router to printer via wireless LAN

2) computer to router via ethernet, router to printer via wireless LAN

3) computer to router via ethernet, router to printer via ethernet

4) computer to router via ethernet, router to printer via wireless LAN

nothing has worked so far.  Router is ethernet connected to DSL (CenturyLink modem, which is not in this loop).  Router is Netgear WNDR4500v3.

Re: Scan from printer to network folder doesn't work. Firewall issue?

Al, I'm thinking your driver package my need downloading and reinstalled. Get it here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-series/7902032

With the printer NOT connected to network or a computer install the software package and follow on screen prompts. Setup the printer on at least one PC, specifically the one in question. Once you have the printer working with a wired USB connection you can then install the WS or wireless service drivers for printing wirelessly over your network. As you add the printer to additional computers they will install the WS drivers as well.

Cheers

Re: Scan from printer to network folder doesn't work. Firewall issue?

Al, looking forward a bit check windows and see if you have SMB1/2/3 enabled.  Here is some info for you on the subject. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2696547/how-to-detect-enable-and-disable-smbv1-smbv2-and-smbv3-in-windows-and

It appears the Netgear gurus weren't forth coming with any ideas on this either: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Wireless-N-Routers/Scan-from-printer-HP-8720-to-network-folder-via-WNDR4500v3/m-p/1549347

Connect your printer DIRECTLY to an Ethernet port on the NETGEAR router and reboot the router. Some additional info you may want to consult is here.

Cheers
