Secure VPN System Tray Icon appears off screen

Windows 10 Pro v1809 OS Build 17763.253

The system tray icon does not detect a taskbar at top of screen and opens above and out of sight. It works on the bottom, right but on the left it appears half on and half off the screen. The app is v1.7.0.325. I have reported it via Microsoft feedback as well.

This is a deal breaker. There is a good reason why I keep my taskbar at the top of my monitor. Every other app, function or icon in Microsoft and other programs is able to detect position for a resulting context menu. This is a basic part of developing an app and I am very surprised a major player like Norton, one I have used for decades, would publish a product with this error.

I actually mentioned it online in chat to Norton support and they acknowledged it's existence with little concern and advised only to move the taskbar.

Aside from the default locations in neighboring countries at the extreme distance in that country from mine(about 4,000 mi. vs a possible few hundred) resulting in unnecessarily slow connections, this will make the service unusable for me.

As Chat noted, the window opening out of sight when the Taskbar is at the top of the screen is a known issue. Not sure why it has not been addressed by now. I'll try to escalate this again.

The 'default' connection is Auto-Select, which is supposed to choose the best performing server connection to your actual location. The slow connections you note may or may not be related to which server you are connected to. It may be a fact of VPN use. As data is encrypted and decrypted as it leaves and returns to it your computer, this overhead is always going to slow your connection.

Re: Secure VPN System Tray Icon appears off screen

While I appreciate your input, a location in British Columbia Canada near Vancouver(west coast above Seattle, WA) routinely connects to Florida. On no planet would that be the best performing route instead of say Seattle, Spokane, Portland, etc.. Reconnecting so far the closest I have gotten was New York. I realize this service is likely a simple and user friendly option for activities that could get away with this type of behavior on average, but as a tech and power user I am finding it lacking, but then that is what my trial is about. Don't get me wrong, I recommend and use Norton for virus and other functions both home and mobile, though not exclusively.

Can we expect some sort of update or acknowledgement from higher ups regarding the tray icon? With what I need I could maybe accept the server issue, but not the system tray having to move my taskbar repeatedly.

Re: Secure VPN System Tray Icon appears off screen

Without knowing the IPs of the servers involved, you cannot do a ping to check access times. But geographic closeness does not always correlate to the quickest servers. It can depend on the saturation of the connections between you and Seattle that makes that option less attractive than the one to Florida. I'm no network expert, but I have seen times when I can connect around the world quicker than I can connect to a site a few hundred miles from me.

I have already asked for some update/comment on the VPN window with the taskbar at the top of the screen.

Re: Secure VPN System Tray Icon appears off screen

I am aware congestion, configuration and hardware issues can make some non-intuitive routes quicker, but this is a constant that is shown in my speed tests as the slowest rates I have ever seen. I will continue to test though. Thank you for looking into the other issue.

Re: Secure VPN System Tray Icon appears off screen

What kind of speed reduction are you referring to?

Have you been able to manually choose different virtual locations to see if you can get better speeds?

I've started to record some examples of those. I will organize them and post soon, tx. As for locations, only by country. By disconnecting and reconnecting I can sometimes effect a change but the location is random. The UI only allows selecting country.

Hi @Noted8,

Thanks for reporting in Norton Community Forums. Could you please provide below information for further investigation?

- Operating System: Windows 10 Pro v1809 OS Build 17763.253?

- Norton Secure VPN version: v1.7.0.325?

- Do you have multiple monitors connected?

- Screen resolutions (All Monitors if connected)

- Please provide screenshot of the app UI with issue

@Sunil_GA

I can confirm the observations of Noted8.

  • OS Windows 10 Pro 1803 build 17134.523 64 bit
  • NVPN ver 1.7.0.325
  • Laptop computer
  • Screen resolution  1600 x 900 (default)

Screenshots.  Also note that if the Taskbar is on the left of the screen, only the right half of the NVPN window is visible, and unmovable.

Taskbar at top of screen.

Taskbar at right side of screen. The NVPN window displays correctly.

Taskbar at left side of screen.

Hope this helps.

Re: Secure VPN System Tray Icon appears off screen

@Sunil_GA he is spot on and mine would look the same. I do use multiple monitors. Main 1680x1050 which is where it is and 2nd 1050x1680. Hard to imagine this problem could exist, not to mention it appears to be an old issue as well. I hope you have your coders working the weekend to fix! ;-)...just keep them supplied with cheetos and red bull.... @peterweb I can't give you enough Kudos for doing that and saving me the time, which I had logged in to do.....ty ty

Let's hope they do something with it. It really is a deal breaker for me. Too disruptive to a well oiled machine. ;-) @Sunil_GA
