Security Alert Emails

Recently I just started getting on my computer emails from shopping sites that I use. These emails stated, "An unrecognized device has signed in to your ---------- account. For your security, we’re checking to make sure this was you. If this was you or someone you know: you don’t have to do anything, your account is secure.  If this was someone else: change your password immediately to secure your account" or something very similar, depending on the website. These alerts also gave locations of the device signing into to the website, which were not my location. I did NOT get these email security alerts on my android phone when signing into the same sites so I figured out after a little while that Norton 360 for windows now has VPN included and that was why I was getting the security alert emails as my location would be changed because of the VPN, which I believe was never included with the Norton I had previously. I tested my theory by turning off the VPN and then signing into these same websites. Whoopee!!! I was right, no more security email alerts from these websites.                                                          I am quite proud of myself as I am 87 years old and not that computer savvy. I would like to point out that  this did not work the first time I signed in with the Norton VPN turned off. However, since I was sure the email security alerts were due to the Norton VPN being turned on, I phoned my computer savy nephew and explained everything to him, and he said I was correct about the Norton VPN being turned on and the reason turning the VPN off wasn't stopping the security email alerts was I probably hadn't rebooted my computer after turning off the Norton VPN. My nephew was correct as  after rebooting no more of those annoying security alert emails.                                                                               What I am wondering is why can't Norton 360 with VPN work the same as my android phone and only turn on for risky Wi-Fi  networks and turn off for secure Wi-Fi networks.  This would have saved me from getting those scary annoying email alerts.                                                            I hope this might be helpful to someone else with a similar problem.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Holly

VPN will automatically turn on for unsecure or compromised Wi-Fi networks and turns off for secure networks.
