Security Alert Popups in Emails

I recently have started getting Security Alert pop up notifications in my emails.  They say "The Identity of this website or the integrity of this connection cannot be verified." They offer the choice to either proceed, not proceed or view the certificate.  They seem to appear randomly from a few different known email senders. Because I am getting them from known addresses, I've always just clicked out of the pop up and not worried about it. One in particular, a list I've been subscribed to for a while, is a daily e-reader book deal list ("EreaderIQ Daily") and is the one currently causing me the problem.    For some reason today, I can not click out of the notification no matter what I click on.  I have had to close out my email folder with Task Manager but I cannot delete the specific email from this sender because I keep getting stuck with the pop up every time.

I've tried temporarily disabling Norton email scan to see if that would stop the Security Alert but it didn't.  I don't know what else might be causing it but I'm hoping maybe someone here could help me.  I'm currently using Windows Vista with Norton Security Version 22.9.3.13.  My email is a POP3 format through Windows Mail with Verizon Fios as my ISP.

Can anyone suggest a way for me to turn off the Security Alert so I can delete the email and more importantly, suggest where these alerts could be coming from.

Thank you very much.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

Hello

The latest Norton version is 22.9.4.8. Please run Live Update until you are all updated, rebooting when necessary. You aren't getting Windows Updates any more, so maybe you picked up something that way and your Norton isn't up to date.

Thanks.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

Are you sure this is a Norton message? It could be from your email client.

Can you post a screenshot of the message? Blank out any personal information.

Instructions to post screenshots can be found here

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

As suggested, it is a Windows Mail notification, having nothing to do with Norton.  It is a problem with the site's certificate.  Have you clicked to view the certificate?  Commonly, this type of problem arises from an expired certificate.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

Thank you all for your replies.  First, I did the Live Updates so I am now showing the version Floplot indicated, 22.9.4.8.

Second, I was not sure if this was a Norton alert.  It makes sense that it may not be since disabling my Norton email scan didn't help fix the problem, but because I wasn't sure, I thought I would start here.  Yes I did view the certificate but I didn't install it, although that is an option.  I also did look in my email tools/security to see if there is anything checked or unchecked (although admittedly I'm not the most knowledgeable) that could be causing this problem.  I didn't see anything there that looked out of order. The problem is I cannot close this security alert by clicking "yes," "no," or with the "x" at the top right.  Therefore as previously stated, I can't delete this email and this thing keeps popping back up.  Once it does I have to close out by way of Task Manager.

I wasn't able to upload the screenshots although I tried by two different methods.  For some reason it's telling me I can only upload pictures having extensions of txt, pdf, and txt, which is inconsistent with the instructions, but anyway, it didn't workI'm on a laptop, so I think it should have.

Here is an example of the security alert if you want to see what it looks like.  http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21677646.

Thank you.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

Thank you.  I tried it again and it worked that time.  I honestly think I did it the same way the first time but more importantly, it worked.  I'm reading more about these alerts and you are right, it is not a Norton issue anyway.  This particular security alert I'm learning about from searching more online -- "dreamhost" -- is one that's been around for awhile and causing a lot of problems.  I'm not apparently the first to encounter it but so far I haven't found any solutions for how to get rid of it.  It's not a virus, just some kind of coding snafu.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

I just wanted to add that after yet further investigation online, I did decide to try installing the security certificate.  It's now installed on my computer and after rebooting, the security alert pop up is still there.  Installation didn't seem to make any difference.  I've sent emails to the email sender and the company listed on the certificate asking for their input.  Unless someone here just happens to know how to make this pop up window go away and can share that with me, as you said, I don't think this is a Norton issue.  Thanks very much.

Re: Security Alert Popups in Emails

Hello

I would recommend going to one of the free Malware Removal Sites which Norton recommends. Besides helping to remove malware, they can also check your Windows install perhaps. Tell them what your issue is and what you have tried so far. Please don't try anything else on your own. The expert will work with you to help get rid of this popup. They can probably find the source of it and help you to get rid of it safely. If you have any questions you can ask the expert. Remember to just pick one of the sites.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users who unfortunately has passed away. That site is still being run by a good expert who happens to be one of the other Gurus.  The new site is listed first in this link.

Thanks.
