"Server preparing restore" ad nauseam

For the first time, I need to restore my last backup.  It's bad enough that it takes over 5hours to back-up my system but now I can't even recover the data.  For the last 2 hours all I get is "server preparing restore".  I run Norton Internet Security and NOBU.

I'm going to leave this running overnight but, if nothing has happened by the morning, I'm out of here.  I need this restore urgently (and it's NOT the connection speed so don't try that excuse).

What on earth is going on and please can you help?

Re: "Server preparing restore" ad nauseam

It's now nearly 7 hours since I tried to download the last backup and still this software is showing the same message.  My download speed is 6 times as fast as my upload speed so it should have finished by now.

I have to get some sleep (its 3:30am here in Spain) but I'm tearing my hair out over this.  Please tell me what is going on with this sosftware.  I see no use in a backup if I can do a restore.

Now 7 hours later - so that's 14 hours to restore so far except when I got up this morning NOBU was just hanging and doing nothing.

I think it's significant that no-one has responded from Norton.  Dire.

Hello hrinspain

The restore is working precisely as it should. It has to recompile all of your data from the various dates it has completed. Once that part is done it will start downloading the data to your computer. It's important to not stop the process. The building of the restore is rather time intensive with all the security layers and incremental pieces it has to retrieve to then download the data to you. It may appear its not working but in reality it is. If there is critical items you need it's best to restore in smaller chunks. Get the items you need immediately first and then restore the remainder and let it go.

If you have a urgent issue with a restore again in the future its best to reach out to support first. Although the forums are actively checked you may not always get an immediate answer.

I think you'll find tha most people doing a restore have an urgent problem - so 14 hours is not acceptable especially when the download stops after that long.  Nothing was working - it just hung.

I  wanted an old copy of IE because mine was corrupted.  Impossible to do this.  I will not be renewing my license.

Hello hrinspain

That's precisely one of the reasons why the service allows you to selectively restore as well as restore the entire set. 14 hours is a realistic time frame when you consider all the work that has to be done to compile the data from the possible months worth of incremental changes. If it was hanging that needs to be investigated by support to see what may have happened.
