should windows defender be activated with norton security ?

Norton, the rescue tools did not work unfortunately & I ended up having to reformat my system and re-load - so with windows 7 - in years past, it appeared that Windows "Defender" program was not compatible with Norton security - is that still true - as that part of my windows update did not install - should that remain that way ?

Hi KCL,

Have you reinstalled Norton?  Normally with a Norton install Windows Defender is turned off!

IIRC  The Windows Defender service will still be active and is required. As such, it may still get updates from Microsoft, so that it would be updated and ready to run, in case you needed to remove Norton for some reason.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

well, when I "chatted" with norton - that individual indicated that I did not need to activate windows defender - but you seem to indicate that I should - so, my concern is that I do not screw up my system between norton security & having windows defender & having microsoft update - crashing my system so thoroughly I had to re-format the entire  system was time consuming - (I have windows 7 - do not like windows 10 & I actually liked windows xp the best) - so keeping windows update & defender is a good thing in your experience ?

You need to understand the difference between the Defender feature and the Defender service.

The Defender feature is what actually causes the active protection of your system to run. That should not be enabled. The  Defender Service is the background service that is required to run the feature and get defender definition updates. That can be left running. It does not conflict with 3rd party AV products.

And if you do uninstall Norton at some time, Defender would be updated and ready to run to protect your system until you reinstalled a 3rd party AV.

I have win defender on but set to do periodic scans when I boot up my system but knows I have norton running but does not interfere or conflict with each other

Last time I enabled Limited Periodic Scanning Norton would run a Full System Scan every time WD scanned.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.
