SLow operation of Windows Disk Cleanup

I've noted that the Disk Clean option in Utilities doesn't get rid of absolutely everything and have occasionally run the Windows equivalent.

I did so today and found it was very slow, seemingly getting stuck on "compressing old files".  I looked for and found a fix for this, involving REGEDIT.  There's a suggestion that when the problem occurs, it's because Windows is looking in the wrong place for the approprite registry entry.  Is there any chance this could be affected by the Registry Clean option in Utilities?

It would help to know a little more information in order to answer your question.  What version of NU are you using?  What version of Windows are you using?

Re: SLow operation of Windows Disk Cleanup

Hi,

I'm using NU V.14 and Windows XP SP3.

SInce posing the question I've followed the DIY fix shown in Microsoft Support Article ID: 812248 and it certainly speeded up the process, but I don't see the "compress old files" operation happening now (perhaps because there's not much to clean up at the moment).

However, I think I'll restore the original registry settings and try a different method shown in the article, in the "Fix it for me" section, in case I got the DIY fix wrong.  I'll advise.

Re: SLow operation of Windows Disk Cleanup

Hi again,

I restored the "Compress old files" function and had another go at Disk Clean Up - it found a few MB and dealt with it fairly quickly - so far so good.  I then tried the "Fix it for me" fix, which appeared to work OK, but can't tell how effective it's been because there's nothing to clean up yet.  I'll monitor and advise.

Re: SLow operation of Windows Disk Cleanup

Hi again,

I left it as long as I could bear, to do another Windows Disk Clean Up, after using the M/S fix and after a lot of internet use.  It worked OK, with no sign of the "Compress Old Files" step.  I'll leave it another few days and do a NU Disk Clean op. and advise further.

Re: SLow operation of Windows Disk Cleanup

Further update.  I ran NU Registry Cleaner and Disk Clean up routines and followed up with Windows DIsk Clean Up.  No problems with the NU stuff (never have been) and this time, nothing to clean up in the Windows routine.  I think we can cll this one closed.

Thanks,

Ian
