SmitFraud.GP needs upgraded!

I realize the world has evolved badly over the last few years, but I miss the days when you could send an email to Norton telling them a new virus is causing a bunch of problems.

To that end: SmitFraud-c & SmitFraud-c.gp needs to be upgraded to a higher rating with a higher spread reported.

I've got a user with it and CAN NOT seem to get it gone. I'm seeing other RECENT reports by others of the same thing.

NAV is not seeing it, nor is AdAware, but Spybot sees it but cannot get rid of it.

HELP!!!! It is causing a LOT of (internet based) problems!

I'm about to dig into the registry but a recent post I saw said another person went the registry route and it didn't fix the problem.

(Wish me luck, eh?)

Maybe it's a recent mutation, but this version of SmitFraud-C and SmitFraud-C.gp is VERY HARD to remove!

Re: SmitFraud.GP needs upgraded!

Please send the files to Symantec.

Here's the way to do it.

Re: SmitFraud.GP needs upgraded!

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Re: SmitFraud.GP needs upgraded!

I just wanted to thank both people who replied.

To the person who wanted me to send "it" to Norton: I don't know what to send.  It's hard to find even though it's hitting my user pretty hard.  As noted, NAV can't even see it.  (Yes, the definitions ARE up-to-date.)

To Stu:  Thanks for the advice on a removal method.  Tried a new AV which actually saw the virus and tried to get rid of it.  If the new option didn't completely work, I'll try your suggestion tomorrow.

Wouldn't you know it has infected a company critical PC.  Thus I have been forced to spend very late nights trying to kill this $&%*# thing.  :-)  Adding to the angst is the fact it takes 90 minutes to run a full sweep on the system.  (Don't ask!  Just pity me.  :)  )

Adding to the misery is the fact SmitFraud-C (& *-C.gp) are gateway trojans and I think they are channeling some even harsher programs that I ALSO have to contend with.

(Remember!  Give me pity!!  Lots and lots of pity!!!)  :-)=)  LOL!

Anyway, I have a high regard and a lot of faith in Norton.  It hurts to have something that my favorite AV can't remove and cannot even see.  Which is why I posted my request for a deeper consideration of this thing on their site.

After all, NAV can't get better (and remain the Best) if no one let's them know of things they can't see.  LOL!

Again, thanks for all the replies.

FVK

P.S.  It is VERY late here.  Forgive me if I missed something in my reply.

Re: SmitFraud.GP needs upgraded!

Both persons are the same ;)

Please try this to remove.

In the url send it tells you how to send the sample of the malware to Symantec. Symantec needs these to make new signatures
